Mustang, Camaro Supercars head south for Teretonga laps

The southernmost FIA-sanctioned racetrack in the world will echo to the sound of Supercars next week.

For the first time in more than twenty-five years, two current specification Supercars Championship cars will be demonstrated on track during the Teretonga International, Round 4 of the Repco NextGen NZ Championship, on January 23-25.

Fans can snag a ride in either a Red Bull Ampol Racing Chevrolet Camaro or a Walkinshaw Andretti United Ford Mustang if they pre-book tickets for the event.

Tickets can be purchased via the Repco NextGen NZ Championship website, www.nextgennz.co.nz

The announcement was made live by Tony Quinn on the grid of today’s Giltrap Group Historic GP event at Taupo International Motorsport Park.

Tony Quinn’s Chevrolet Camaro will be joined by Ryan Wood’s 2025 Repco Supercars Championship title-contending Ford Mustang, which is now locally owned and based in Invercargill.

The Mustang only recently arrived in New Zealand this month, while the Camaro is based at Highlands and is something of a regular at Repco NextGen events; new VCARB Formula 1 driver Arvid Lindblad having experienced driving it at Highlands at last year’s NAPA New Zealand Grand Prix.

Wood will step back into the Mustang for the demonstration laps at Teretonga, while Quinn will drive the Camaro himself on Sunday.

It’s a huge opportunity for Southland Region motorsport fans to see current Supercars in action at their home track – and for fans to jump into the passenger seats.

It comes alongside a massive on-track program at the NextGen event, including the penultimate round of the Castrol Toyota Formula Regional Oceania Trophy, Bridgestone GR86 Championship, Summerset GT New Zealand, SP Tools TA2 NZ Championship, NAPA New Zealand Formula Ford Championship supported by Ford and Nexen Tyre Mazda Super Series.

Both cars will also be in action at the following weekend’s NAPA 70th New Zealand Grand Prix event – with fans able to go into the draw to win a hot lap in either car should they pre-book tickets for that event too.
