No stopping Ugo as American converts pole pace into first CTFROT win at Hampton Downs

American Ugo Ugochukwu underlined his status as the fastest driver of the opening round of the 2026 Castrol Toyota Formula Regional Oceania Trophy with a commanding weekend at Hampton Downs, converting his dominant qualifying pace into a breakthrough race victory in Sunday’s Dorothy Smith Memorial feature race.

Ugochukwu had already stamped his authority on the event earlier in the day by securing pole position for the feature race, his second pole of the weekend, after producing a sensational lap in qualifying for M2 Competition.

His advantage was a commanding three-tenths of a second in a session where the top 17 cars were covered by less than a second.

“I was confident coming into the session, but the pace was even better, and we had an even bigger gap than yesterday,” Ugochukwu said afterwards. “I was feeling at one with the car.”

And it showed. His best laps consistently carried a clear margin over the rest of the field, with the session only truly coming alive in the dying moments as fuel loads dropped.

Hitech’s Jin Nakamura came closest, finishing just under three tenths away, while Louis Sharp for mtec Motorsport, Hitech’s Kanato Le, and Red Bull Junior Ernesto Rivera were all remarkably within three tenths of the pole time.

Behind the leading group, American Indy NXT racer Nolan Allaer continued an eye-catching debut weekend with the sixth fastest, narrowly ahead of Saturday race winner Zack Scoular.

Brit Freddie Slater recovered from an early off to take eighth fastest, while two-time World Rally Champion Kalle Rovanperä produced his biggest step forward of the weekend to qualify ninth.

Rovanperä’s 1m29.751s lap was his best of the meeting and had briefly been good enough for sixth before being shuffled back in the final moments. It placed him on the inside of the fifth row alongside James Wharton and ahead of Supercars star Ryan Wood in 11th.

Sebastian Manson and China’s Yuanpu Cui both dipped under 1:30 to qualify 12th and 13th, respectively, followed by Fionn McLaughlin, Jack Taylor, Yevan David, Cooper Shipman, Ricardo Baptista, and Trevor LaTourette.

While Ugochukwu had been the benchmark in qualifying, the final race of the weekend would not be a straightforward lights-to-flag affair.

The grid for race three was formed from the fastest lap times from race one and race two, placing Red Bull Junior Ernesto Rivera on pole alongside Kanato Le, with James Wharton and Ugochukwu lining up on the second row.

Le made the best launch when the lights went out, with Ugochukwu immediately applying pressure through the opening corners. Rivera held third while Nakamura surged to fourth ahead of Wharton as they crossed the line to start lap two.

Le used the Trophy’s new push-to-pass system to good effect down the long straights, building a lead of almost a second over Ugochukwu and nearly two seconds over Rivera.

Behind them, the battle was fierce, with Nakamura, Wharton, Slater, a fast-starting Louis Sharp, Ryan Wood, Sebastian Manson, Zack Scoular – later handed a five-second penalty for a false start – and Yevan David running nose-to-tail.

By lap six, Ugochukwu had reeled Le back in, and by lap eight, he was right on the rear wing of the Hitech driver. He made a decisive move, starting the pass at Turn 2 and completing it on the exit of Turn 3 to seize the lead.

From there, the American finally had clean air and control of the race.

Further back, Wood was producing one of the drives of the race. He climbed to eighth and spent much of the second half locked in a fierce battle with mtec Motorsport team-mate Sharp, who was under investigation for a false start. Wood survived a wild moment off the circuit at Turn 1 on lap 12 but rejoined without losing position.

The Safety Car was deployed on lap 13 when Colorado driver Trevor LaTourette beached his TJ Speed with HMD Motorsports entry at the notorious Double B corner. The restart came at the start of lap 16, setting up a three-lap sprint to the finish.

Ugochukwu made no mistakes on the restart and immediately began edging away once again. Behind him, Slater and Sharp went wheel-to-wheel before the Kiwi got through, with Slater running wide into the marbles and tumbling down the order to eventually finish 12th.

The intensity remained sky-high across the field in the closing laps, but out front, there was no denying Ugochukwu.

The American powered away in his M2 Competition FT60 to take his first Trophy victory by a second over Le, with Rivera third, Nakamura fourth, Wharton fifth, Sharp sixth, Wood seventh, Manson eighth, Yevan David ninth, and Scoular completing the top ten.

“That was important for us,” Ugochukwu said afterwards.

“Starting fourth, we had plenty to do, but I made a mega start – the best I’ve done so far. It was tricky moving through to the lead, but once I got there, I just had to manage it. The pace all weekend has been really good, and we’re scoring strong points.”

After a weekend of relentless speed, dominant qualifying, and a decisive race victory, Ugochukwu left Hampton Downs as the clear form driver of the opening round of the 2026 Castrol Toyota Formula Regional Oceania Trophy.
