Penalties provide mixed grid for Belgium Grand Prix; Sainz on pole

Max Verstappen qualified fastest for tonights Belgium Grand Prix but will start at the rear of the field after Red Bull take a penalty for a new power unit in his car. This means Carlos Sainz is promoted to lead the field, starting alongside Sergio Perez.

Along with Max Verstappen, six other drivers have also been hit with penalties and will start at the back. This includes Charles Leclerc, who sits second in the championship and will start alongside leader Verstappen, the duo starting 15th and 16th respectively.

Esteban Ocon, Lando Norris, Zhou Guanyu and Mick Schumacher are among the other drivers sent to the rear, whilst Valtteri Bottas receives a 25 grid-place penalty for a raft of changes to his current power unit.

The changes for Bottas mean he will still start in 14th, the 25 place grid-drop actually seeing him start in a higher position than that he qualified due to the sheer number of new power units among competitors.

So dramatic are the changes that Sebastian Vettel will start in 10th despite being knocked out in Q1. Yuki Tsunoda, who qualified 19th for the event, jumps up to 13th on the grid.

With a number of the leading cars at the back of the pack, the door is opened for drivers like Fernando Alonso, who will start third. Alex Albon is also out of position in his Williams, and will start sixth on the grid. Albon did, however, impress in making Q3 for the first time this year and had qualified ninth fastest.

The mixed grid will create a spectacle at Spa-Francorchamps, with plenty of overtakes likely. Red Bull have looked the most likely team all weekend with car pace, seeming to have an advantage of over half a second over the rest of the pack.

Mercedes and Ferrari have been slightly closer, with the Italian team slightly ahead on pace. Lewis Hamilton and George Russell will start the Grand Prix in fourth and fifth respectively.

There may yet still be further changes in the build up to the event, with teams capitalising on the diversity of the grid around them.

Racing starts at 1am NZ time, and will be shown live on Spark Sport.
