Rosebank Speedway in Auckland has been given a major boost ahead of the 2025–26 season, with the Whau Local Board approving a new 10-year lease for the historic venue.

The decision provides long-term security for Rosebank Speedway to continue operating out of Rosebank Park Domain, ensuring the sport’s future at the West Auckland site.

The lease approval is the result of years of hard work by the speedway community, with special thanks going to Gary Hughes and Doug Cole for their unwavering efforts over the past six years.

Speedway New Zealand also played a key role in assisting with the process, while ongoing fundraising efforts and generous prize donations from supporters helped make the milestone possible.

“This lease gives us the confidence to plan for the future and invest in exciting upgrades at the venue,” the committee said.

“We’re now looking forward to putting all our energy into delivering the best possible shows for our competitors and fans.”

Rosebank Speedway boasts a rich history spanning over 90 years. The venue first opened on 17 February 1934, quickly becoming a cornerstone of motorcycle and sidecar racing in New Zealand.

Over the decades, Rosebank has hosted numerous national and international events, producing local heroes and attracting riders from around the globe.

It’s tight, action-packed dirt oval remains one of the most unique and entertaining speedway tracks in the country.

With the first practice just weeks away, anticipation is building for another thrilling season. Rosebank has now released its provisional 2025–26 season calendar, which includes a mix of classic events and championship rounds:

  • 19 October – Race Meeting 1
  • 9 November – Auckland Flattrack
  • 30 November – Sidecar Series Round 1
  • 14 December – Auckland Solos / Auckland Juniors
  • 10 January – NZ Sidecar GP
  • 8 February – Auckland Quarter Midget / Outlaw Kart
  • 1 March – NZ Solo GP
  • 8 March – Engineering North Island Solo
  • 22 March – Auckland Sidecars / Auckland Classics
  • 12 April – Sidecar Series Round 2
  • 26 April – ANZAC / Remembrance

Each meeting will feature a wide range of classes, including Peewee, Junior Solo, Junior Flatrackers, Quarter Midgets, Outlaw Karts, Classic Sidecars, Solos, Sidecars and Flattrackers.

The newly secured lease provides Rosebank Speedway with a stable platform for growth, with venue upgrades planned for the near future.

For competitors, supporters, and families who’ve kept the sport alive in West Auckland for generations, the lease renewal is more than just paperwork; it’s a guarantee that the iconic track’s engines will keep roaring well into the future.
