Ryan Wood capped a stunning Saturday at Taupo by converting pole position into his first-ever single-seater victory at Round 2 of the 2026 Castrol Toyota Formula Regional Oceania Trophy.

The mtec Motorsport driver delivered a blistering final flying lap in qualifying to secure pole position, before backing it up with a commanding lights-to-flag performance in Race 1 to take a dominant debut win in the category.
Wood had been on electrifying form throughout the 15-minute qualifying session, clocking a very fast time early on and remaining in the top group throughout.
Team-mate Zack Scoular looked secure on pole through the middle portion of the session after a sequence of mega laps that gave him a two-tenths advantage over the rest of the field, but in the final two minutes Wood delivered his best lap of the weekend when it mattered most.
“Louis [Sharp] and I went out and were going hard straight away,” said the young Kiwi, in his first-ever season of single-seater racing.
“We were quick, and we had a great car, but it was tough to get those last couple of tenths out of it. I was confident, but made a few mistakes and was a bit hard on myself, but that last one was definitely good.”
His 1:23.258 proved too much for the rest of the field, with the top ten covered by just seven tenths of a second.

Series leader Ugo Ugochukwu narrowly missed pole after a wobble through the final corner on his best lap, but still secured a front-row start for M2 Competition. Scoular’s strong performance netted him third on the grid, while Freddie Slater completed an mtec Motorsport–M2 Competition front two rows.
Sharp qualified fifth in another strong showing for mtec Motorsport, with Kanato Le leading the Hitech runners in sixth. Australian James Wharton was the seventh fastest for TJ Speed with HMD Motorsports, followed by Jin Nakamura and Seb Manson, while Yevan David completed the top ten. Manson, however, carried a five-place grid penalty from Hampton Downs and started 14th.
Two-time world rally champion Kalle Rovanperä ran as high as seventh midway through the session but dropped back as the more experienced single-seater runners found extra pace. He qualified 14th but lined up 13th after Manson’s penalty.
From pole, Wood made a perfect start in Race 1 and immediately took control of the 18-lap contest. He led through Turn 1 with Ugochukwu slotting into second, but the American was instantly under pressure from Scoular. The leading trio broke away early, pulling several car lengths clear of the chasing pack led by Slater, Sharp, Jin Nakamura and Wharton.
Knowing the tyre degradation characteristics of the Taupo circuit better than most, Wood settled into a rhythm at the front, focusing on consistency rather than outright pace. That was enough to keep Ugochukwu a car length or two behind through the early stages.

By lap four, Slater had closed onto the back of Scoular, creating a four-way fight at the front, with Sharp also charging hard from behind and setting fastest sectors.
Ugochukwu was forced to use every inch of the circuit to defend from Scoular as the race approached the halfway mark, which allowed Wood to stretch his advantage. By lap nine, the Kiwi had built a 1.6-second lead.
Scoular made a bold attempt to pass Ugochukwu through the final chicane on lap eight, locking up in the process, but the American held firm. Slater immediately capitalised on Scoular’s compromised run to snatch third with a textbook move using the series’ new push-to-pass system. Wood completed the lap with a lead of more than two seconds.
Behind the leading group, a lively midfield scrap ran from Kanato Le in ninth all the way back to Fionn McLaughlin in seventeenth.
Scoular’s race unravelled after he picked up a severe flat spot on his front-left Pirelli, leading to repeated lock-ups and heavy braking smoke. Sharp closed rapidly and passed him on the penultimate lap to claim fourth.
Out front, nobody had an answer for Wood. The Kiwi set the fastest lap early on and then unleashed a relentless series of fast laps in the closing stages to put the race beyond doubt.

“Big credit to our whole team,” said Wood afterwards.
“Sunday last week was rough, but they built the car back up, and ever since it’s been a jet.
“It feels nice, I’ve still got a bit of work to do, but I think we are there or thereabouts. I’m more than happy. It was vital to take the lead early and run the race I wanted. There are a few things we need to tune up, but I’m looking forward to Race 2.”
Wood crossed the line two seconds clear of Ugochukwu, who finished a comfortable second and extended his championship lead to 35 points. Slater completed the podium ahead of Sharp, with the struggling Scoular finishing fifth.
Wharton was a lonely sixth, while Ernesto Rivera delivered a strong drive from 11th to finish seventh. Kanato Le and Jin Nakamura followed for Hitech in eighth and ninth, with Yuanpu Cui holding off Yevan David for tenth.
It was a remarkable achievement for Wood, who scored his first Supercars podium at the same circuit in 2025 and claimed his first Castrol Toyota Formula Regional Oceania Trophy win in just his fifth single-seater start.
