Van Gisbergen & Heimgartner avoid drama, qualify for shootout

Shane van Gisbergen has got his Gold Coast 500 weekend off to the perfect start, qualifying for the Top 10 Shootout by setting the fastest time in qualifying.

A 1min 10.404sec flyer was enough to set a massive benchmark, Chaz Mostert second fastest some .3919 of a second behind.

Brodie Kostecki drove a solid effort to take third fastest, while Will Davison will be aiming for yet another pole in the Top 10 Shootout after qualifying fourth.

Veteran James Courtney and David Reynolds qualified fifth and sixth fastest respectively, while Andre Heimgartner makes it two Kiwis in the shootout.

Thomas Randle, Cam Waters and Anton de Pasquale round out the ten.

Whilst the qualifying pace was superb from a number of competitors, they will need to do it again come the Top 10 Shootout at 4.05pm (NZ time).

Two red flags hampered the session, lockups hurting Jake Kostecki and Todd Hazlewood on the unforgiving streets of Surfers Paradise, both making contact with the wall in seperate incidents.

The grid from position 11 onwards has now also been decided from qualifying, Chris Pither putting down an impressive 1min 11.2525 and will start from 16th.

Race 31 of the Supercars season begins at 6.45pm.
