Wood qualifies third for Bathurst Super2 finale

Ryan Wood will start third on the grid in this evening’s Super2 race at Bathurst following a shortened qualifying session for an Aaron Love crash on top of the mountain.

Wood was denied the opportunity to complete his final flyer because of the crash and was improving on time before the red flag came out.

Zak Best claimed his second pole position of the weekend, becoming the first Super2 driver to break to 2:05 barrier at Bathurst, setting a record 2:04.7025.

That time was seventh-tenths faster than Kai Allen, who is elevated to the front row after Love’s time was invalidated for causing the red flag in the final minutes.

Love, who won yesterday, clipped the inside wall at Reid Park’s Turn 6, bouncing across the track and hitting the outside wall entering Turn 7 at speed, severely damaging his car, cutting a left wheel loose and bringing an early end to the session.

A very scary moment for Aaron Love brings an end to @ARMORALLAusNZ Super2 Qualifying with a red flag.

The front row is, therefore, the same as yesterday’s race, where Wood started well and made side-on contact with Allen at Turn 1, sustaining damage that forced him out of the race.

Having set an earlier 2:05.6247, Wood retains his spot on the second row, boosted to third given Love’s relegation. Zane Morse will start next to him in fourth.

Cooper Murray, who is Wood’s closest contender for third in the standings, also starts seventh once again.

Today’s Dunlop Series race begins at 5.55 pm.
