Keeping up with the Kiwis, your guide to the action: July 23-25

Sit back and enjoy some of our best Kiwis duking it out on the international stage this weekend.

In GTs, Brendon Leitch and Liam Lawson are in action with the British GT Championship and DTM.

Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy electrify the streets of London in the penultimate round of the Formula E championship.

And on two-wheels, Damon Rees, Shane Richardson and Cormac Buchanan are at Brands Hatch for the latest round of the British Superbike championship.

Brendon Leitch

  • What: British GT Championship
  • Where: Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium
  • When: SUN 10.35 pm
  • How to follow: YouTube

Brendon Leitch makes his British GT debut this weekend at Spa following the cancellation of the Portimao 24 Hour.

The Kiwi is driving the same Lamborghini Huracan GT3 he steered to a podium in this year’s Hockenheim 12 Hour.

It has been several weeks since Leitch last drove a race car, but he has frequently been running and slogging it out in the gym.

The Spa race is just two hours with a sole driver change.

It is a mere sprint for Leitch, who has devoted his training to longer endurance races.

Still, Spa is an exciting circuit that demands total bravery to pull out a fast lap time.

You can check out our full preview with Leitch here.

Liam Lawson

  • What: DTM
  • Where: EuroSpeedway Lausitz, Germany
  • When: R1 SAT 11.30 pm | R2 SUN 11.30 pm
  • How to follow: DTM TV (free)

After his stunning debut in Monza last month, Liam Lawson will be targeting another strong weekend when he arrives at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz this weekend.

For the first time in DTM history, the circuit will include the opening corner of the tri-oval into its usual Grand Prix layout.

Already there is the suggestion that the GT3-spec cars will be able to transit the banked curve flat-out in qualifying.

Lawson, who claimed a win and 14th in the first two races of the season, will have to deal with DTM’s constantly evolving Balance of Performance criteria, which affects the speed of each car between sessions.

It means this weekend is a complete unknown for the Formula 2 star.

However, he has proven time and time again how adept he is at rising to an unfamiliar challenge.

Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy

  • What: Formula E
  • Where: Streets of London, United Kingdom
  • When: R1 SUN 2 am | R2 MON 1 am
  • How to follow: Sky Sport

New York was a mixed weekend for our Formula E Kiwis.

Mitch Evans rued a point-less weekend after a mechanical failure in race one and a crash while running on second in race two.

Meanwhile, Nick Cassidy led most of race one before ultimately finishing fourth. He then capitalised on Evans’ mistake in race two to snare a podium.

Evans and Cassidy are still within a shot of the driver’s title with four races left, but neither can afford any more errors.

Cassidy will have to deal with the burden of being in Group 1 for qualifying, while Evans slips back to Group 2.

The London Street circuit has undergone heavy changes since its last race.

Though the new layout has received criticism from teams and drivers that it could lead to a processional race with little overtaking.

It means there is added weight on claiming a strong starting position in qualifying.

British Superbikes Contingent

  • What: British Superbikes
  • Where: Brands Hatch, United Kingdom
  • When: Race Time TBC
  • How to follow: Sky Sport

Shane Richardson (main image) and Damon Rees will be gunning for improvements in the third round of the British Superstock 1000 championship.

A loose chain meant Richardson retired from race one at Knockhill before finishing 16th in race two.

Rees fared slightly better, claiming 11th in race one and 20th in race two despite his airbag going off.

In the British Honda Talent Cup, young Cormac Buchanan is pushing for his first win.

Buchanan scored his first podium last round at Knockhill, which he dedicated to his great-great-grandfather who hailed from Scotland.

The Red Bull Rookies Cup rider is fifth in the Talent Cup championship after two rounds.
