Mixed day for Callum Hedge at Winton

Callum Hedge started the day strong at Winton Motor Raceway, qualifying on the front row of the grid, before a moment in the race saw him drop back in the Porsche Carrera Cup field.

Qualifying

The Porsche field used a new qualifying format for the weekend, with the Pro-Am and Pro cars qualifying separately.

Given the cold temperature at the track and the short sessions the last lap of the session was expected to be the fastest for each driver, as the tyres came up to the ideal temperature.

With 2 minutes remaining in the Pro session Hedge jumped to the top of the times with a 1.20.15 minute lap.

Time continued to improve in the session’s final minutes, with Hedge improving his time, setting a 1.19.91 lap.

Soon after Dylan O’Keefe went to the top of the timesheets with a 1.19.84 to take pole at the very end of the session, with Hedge unable to go quicker on his final lap, though his previous lap time was enough to secure second place.

Race 1

Hedge struggled to get his Team Porsche New Zealand entry off the line on the opening lap.

The Kiwi ran wide and ended up running off track after a moment that saw him three-wide early on the opening lap of the race.

The moment dropped Hedge back down the pack, sitting 20th at the end of the opening lap.

Through the first half of the race Hedge would regain a few positions sitting 16th by the end of the race.

The race was won by Hari Jones, ahead of Dylan O’Keeffe in second and David Russell rounding out the podium in third.

The second race of the weekend will get underway from 12.25 pm Sunday.
