Feeney pips Waters for pole in Tasmania

Broc Feeney pipped Cam Waters in this afternoon’s Tasmania SuperSprint qualifying session to claim the pole for this evening’s race.

Feeney set a 50.9884-second flyer late in Qualifying 3 to jump to the top, with Waters threatening to topple the time on his final lap but ultimately falling 0.0820 seconds short.

Brodie Kostecki was a further 0.0053 seconds behind in third and will line up next to Nick Percat.

Chaz Mostert qualified fifth, ahead of Cameron Hill, Ryan Wood, Anton De Pasquale, Tim Slade and James Golding, who completed the top ten.

A late red flag in Qualifying 2 caused a major shakeup of the grid, with championship leader Will Brown, David Reynolds, Andre Heimgartner, Richie Stanaway, and Jaxon Evans among those caught out.

With the field all on or beginning their final laps in Q2, Thomas Randle slid across the grass entering Turn 2 and shot across the track before making light contact with the barrier in the gravel.

Randle was able to resume, but a red flag with 38 seconds remaining prevented drivers from improving on their final runs.

Brown was one of those looking to improve to secure a place in Q3 in the top ten, but his effort was cut short, and he is forced to start from 15th.

That gives Mostert a significant advantage in the battle for the championship lead, with the WAU driver a full ten places ahead. Mostert trails Brown by 105 points ahead of the race.

Heimgartner will start from 20th, alongside BJR teammate Jaxon Evans and behind James Courtney and Richie Stanaway, who lockout the ninth row.

Earlier, Matt Payne was a shock elimination from Q1, joining Macauley Jones, Jack Le Brocq and Will Davison in the bottom four, with 20 drivers progressing.

Payne’s best effort, a 51.9201-second flyer, was over one-tenth outside the top 20, and places him on the back row alongside Davison.

Le Brocq, who has also shown good pace in practice, will start 22nd, next to Jones.

This evening’s race begins at 6.10 pm NZST and will be shown live on Sky Sport.
