A piece of New Zealand motorsport history is set to live on as the iconic infrastructure from Pukekohe Park Raceway finds a second life at the upcoming Thunder Ridge Motorsport Park in the Bay of Plenty.

Thanks to the vision and tremendous efforts of Tony Roberts, Gary Stirling, and Roger Williams, 103 truckloads of barriers are making the journey to ensure Pukekohe’s legacy continues to shape the future of New Zealand motorsport.

“Nice bit of history to take forward,” said Deborah Day, Motorsport New Zealand President.

Pukekohe Park Raceway, a legendary venue that hosted countless thrilling battles and saw generations of racers carve their names into history, closed its doors to motorsport in 2023. But rather than fading into memory, its impact will carry forward as its infrastructure is repurposed for Thunder Ridge, a new facility set to become a premier destination for racers and fans alike.

The enormous logistical and financial effort required to transport and reinstall these barriers is a testament to Roberts, Stirling, and Williams’ passion and commitment. Their dedication ensures that Thunder Ridge benefits from high-quality safety measures and retains a direct connection to New Zealand’s motorsport heritage.

For fans and competitors, this means that when Thunder Ridge roars to life, a small but significant part of Pukekohe will be right there with them. The echoes of legendary races, daring overtakes, and unforgettable moments will serve as the foundation for new chapters of motorsport excitement.

As Thunder Ridge takes shape, this fusion of history and innovation reminds us that while venues may change, the spirit of motorsport endures. Thanks to the efforts of those preserving Pukekohe’s legacy, the future of New Zealand racing will continue to be built on the greatness of the past.

Thunder Ridge Motorsport Park is scheduled to open in December 2026 at the TECT Park between Rotorua and Tauranga.

Thunder Ridge Motorsport Park Plan.

Focused on grassroots motorsport events, car club events, and track days, the 70-hectare facility will include a 3.2km circuit, pit garages, on-site garages, club rooms, a cafe, and a camping ground.

It will provide the Bay of Plenty, its surrounding regions, and wider New Zealand with a world-class and affordable facility for multiple activities.
