Blaney on Pole, as Van Gisbergen Struggles in Atlanta Qualifying

Shane van Gisbergen will start near the tail of the field for this weekend’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway, having qualified 30th in the Trackhouse Racing Camaro this morning.

The Cup Series Rookie completed a 31.336-second flyer on the 2.48 km (1.54 miles) quad-oval, 0.428 seconds off the pole-setting time.

He will start alongside Trackhouse Racing teammate Daniel Suárez for tomorrow morning’s race.

The qualifying session saw a clear Ford advantage, with only Kyle Busch’s RCR Chevrolet cracking the top ten. The first round saw Joey Logano, a two-time Atlanta winner, lead the way with a time of 30.892 seconds. Ryan Blaney and Austin Cindric followed closely behind.

Trackhouse Racing’s struggles were evident. Daniel Suárez led the team’s charge finishing in a lowly 29th (31.332), with Shane van Gisbergen a mere 0.004 seconds behind in 30th. Ross Chastain rounded out the disappointing Trackhouse performance in 33rd.

In the second round, Blaney cemented his pole position with a time of 30.908 seconds, edging out teammate Cindric by a scant 0.002 seconds. Josh Berry completed the top three. Last weekend’s Daytona 500 victor, William Byron, ended up in a less-than-ideal 16th position amid the Chevrolet struggles.

This sets the stage for a captivating race tomorrow. The 260-lap showdown begins at 8:30 AM NZT, and you can catch it live and free on ThreeNow.
