MotorSport New Zealand has announced that the D1NZ has officially been granted National Championship status for the 2025-26 season.

Its long-standing contribution to the sport and its position as the premier drifting series in New Zealand will now be formally recognised as the D1NZ National Drifting Championship.

D1NZ has, for decades, stood as the pinnacle of drifting in New Zealand, weaving together adrenaline-fuelled action and innovation.

From its grassroots beginnings to its current standing as a major contender on the global drifting stage, the championship’s evolution mirrors the passion and dedication of its competitors, organisers, and loyal fanbase.

MotorSport New Zealand President Deborah Day says the elevation of D1NZ to National Championship status is both a celebration of the category’s legacy and an investment in its future.

“Drifting holds a unique place in our motorsport landscape, attracting a younger and increasingly diverse audience,” said Day.

“D1NZ has earned its reputation for innovation and a commitment to growing the sport. Recognising D1NZ as a National Championship is a natural next step and a milestone we are delighted to formalise.”

Under the leadership of a refreshed management team, D1NZ is entering a new era. The organisation, driven by professionals deeply embedded in both drifting and motorsport entertainment, bring a renewed focus on world-class fan experiences.

This includes integrating enhanced event accessibility and new ways for fans to connect with the sport in real time.

D1NZ executive James McManaway says the recognition marks a major moment for the drifting community.

“D1NZ has always been built on passion,” said McManaway.

“Passion from our drivers, our crew, and our fans.

“Being recognised as a National Championship validates decades of hard work and sets the foundation for even greater growth. We’re excited to deliver an elevated product both on and off the track.”

The 2025-26 D1NZ National Drifting Championship gets underway this weekend at Teretonga Park in Invercargill.
