Jaxon Evans has made the best possible start to his 2020 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup campaign after topping both days of the official pre-season test from the Red Bull Ring in Austria.
The Porsche junior is set to kick off his second Supercup season with his new outfit BWT Lechner Racing starting in two weeks as a support class for the revised Austrian Grand Prix weekend.
Evans finished an uncharacteristic seventh in Tuesday’s morning session before setting a crushing 1.30.055s lap time around the Spielberg venue to end the day over three-tenths ahead of his nearest rival.
The kiwi toured the 4.3km circuit a grand total of 63 times on his first return to racing since the Covid-19 pandemic sentenced world motorsport into an unforeseen hiatus.
Evans then proved his day one pace was no fluke by improving his best lap time by under a tenth on Wednesday afternoon to end the two-day session as the only driver to have cracked the 1.29 barrier.
The 23-year-old set a 1.29.991 to narrowly pip hard-charging Dutch driver Larry ten Voorde in the day’s final session.
Fellow Porsche junior Ayhancan Güven also set very notable lap times, flirting on the fringes of the Top 5 across both days.
Reigning Carrera Cup Australia champion Jordan Love had a turbulent start to his rookie campaign. The 21-year-old failed to make much of an impression and ended the days 10th and 13th overall.
The truncated Porsche Supercup season kicks off from the Red Bull Ring on July 3-5 before returning to the same venue one week later as a part of a doubleheader.
The series then follows the confirmed eight-round Formula 1 calendar which is slated to conclude at Monza, Italy on September 9.
