Formula 1 announced on Thursday that the Australian Grand Prix will stay in Melbourne until 2035 alongside the FIA Formula 2 and FIA Formula 3 championships which join the grand prix weekend from next year.
“The Australian Grand Prix has never been bigger, with more than 419,000 people flocking to Albert Park for this year’s race,” said Martin Pakula, minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events for the Victorian Government.
“We know how important this event is to our economy and that’s why we’ve delivered the longest extension for the race since it has been held in Melbourne.”
F1 president Stefano Domenicali said, “The race has always been a favorite for the fans, drivers and the teams and Melbourne is an incredible and vibrant international city that is a perfect match for our sport.”
While no New Zealanders currently compete in Formula 1, Kiwis making the trip over to Australia for the Grand Prix weekend now have the opportunity to support New Zealand F2 drivers Liam Lawson and Marcus Armstrong who will now be a little closer to home.
Even closer to home will be Australian drivers Jack Doohan and Calan Williams given they remain within Formula 2.
FIA Formula 2 and Formula 3 CEO Bruno Michel commented, “I am extremely happy to add Melbourne to both F2 and F3 calendars from 2023.”
“It further enhances the international aspect of both our championships, having them race on a new continent. It also shows that more and more circuits believe that F2 and F3 are an added value to the Formula 1 Grand Prix experience, showcasing the next generation of drivers.”
Supercars will also keep its support race slot ensuring fans are treated to a full weekend of true Australian motorsport.
