The Honda Civic Type R has added another lap record to its name, this time around the iconic Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany.
It isn’t an out and out record but rather the fastest time any production front-wheel drive car has ever driven around the 20.8km track, an accolade it achieved at Suzuka Circuit in Japan as well.
The hot hatch set a time of 7:44.881 around the German course on a set of dealer-issued Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 Connect tyres, beating out all front-wheel drive record holders before it.
Funnily enough, the new record is actually slower than the old one set by the Renault Megane RS Trophy-R which did a 7:40.1 lap. That’s because of a rule change in 2019 which saw the point at which a lap started and ended change, meaning a full lap is now longer.
If we take the new regulations into account, the Trophy-R completed the lap in 7:45.399, just over half a second slower than the new Civic Type R.
It’s also worth mentioning the previous generation Civic Type R (FK8) set the same record at the Nürburgring six years prior, showing just how hot these little hatches really are.
