Lochlainn Fitzgerald-Symes to race Porsche 997.2 in inaugural Super GT season

Lochlainn Fitzgerald-Symes has confirmed he will compete in the inaugural Rodin Cars Super GT series in his Porsche 997.2 Cup Car.

Fitzgerald-Symes has been a regular competitor in endurance racing but is now looking forward to the first two Championship rounds in the South Island, at Highlands Motorsport Park and Mike Pero Motorsport Park.

“It’s going to be good to have some even competition. There are some very good drivers in the Porsche class especially, the likes of Connor Adam, Matt Whittaker, Paul Kelly etc – the cars are relatively even and you know with those guys you can race hard but cleanly,” Fitzgerald-Symes said.

“I think the timed pit stops should work well, it will balance the field.”

Fitzgerald-Symes Porsche 997.2 entry will be supported by Tile People, Ultra Interiors, Carters, Eurotec Design, Northern Scaffolding and Carlton Electrical.

“We’ve got a great group of sponsors and partners on board the car. Thankful to have their support and looking to repay them with some good results throughout the season.”

After racing in a range of cars from an E30 in the BMW Driver Series, a SEAT León Supercopa to more recently an Audi RS3 in the New Zealand TCR Championship Fitzgerald-Symes is enjoying the move to a Porsche.

“The Porsche is just such a great car to race, I have picked up a few wins and a few podiums here and there. Racing is just a hobby for me to go out and have fun, but looking forward to seeing how we do in this series.

“It does require a different approach, particularly if you’ve been racing a front-wheel-drive car such as the Audi TCR.

“The racing will be great, I love Highlands, it’s just such an awesome circuit. I haven’t raced a Porsche before at Ruapuna, so there will be a little bit of learning required there that weekend.

“I like Taupo as a circuit, but we’re certainly going to have to watch tyre wear, as the track is just so hard on tyres.”

Following the two South Island rounds in January, the Rodin Cars Super GT Series will then head to Hampton Downs February 12-13, before the final round at Bruce Mclaren Motorsport Park March 26-27
