Liam MacDonald of Invercargill has taken the Southland Sports Car Club Champions Trophy for the thirteenth time. His achievement was recognised at the club’s 2024/2025 season prizegiving at Teretonga Park in Invercargill on Monday night.
MacDonald first won the trophy in 2013 and has won it every year since, except 2017, while last year he shared it with Anthony Ralston.
The Club Champion title is decided on points across all the club’s disciplines, and MacDonald earned the trophy by winning the Keith McFadzien Trophy for the Motorkhana Championship for the eighth time. He was also second in the Sprint Championship, the two results giving him the Warren Robbie Memorial Trophy for the overall ClubSport Championship.
Craig Allan of Invercargill was the Club Championship runner-up for the second year in a row and the third time overall, after winning the SSCC Speed Trophy for the Sprint Championship in his Honda Integra, ahead of Macdonald and Blake Cooper. Allan was also third in the Motorkhana Championship behind Macdonald and Andrew Kennedy. He also won the Stresscrete 1601cc & over Speed Trophy and finished runner-up in the ClubSport Championship behind MacDonald.
Blake Cooper was the Junior Driver of the Year, winning the Ladies Committee Trophy for the third year in a row. Cooper was fourth in the Motorkhana Championship, third in the Sprint Championship and the winner of the Discount Tyres 0-1600cc Speed Trophy in his Honda Civic, those results giving him third overall in the ClubSport Championship. In addition, he became the National Junior ClubSport Champion during the year.
Dave McLean of Balfour won the Race Championship and, with it, the Noel McIntyre Trophy, exactly twenty years after he first won it. McLean also won the Maxis Projects Ltd 1601-2500cc class from Nieko Scoles and Jeremy Skeggs and finished second in the Flying Farewell Championship.
Lynden Prebble of Dipton won the Erskine Flying Farewell Trophy and also the Auto Centre Trophy for winning the 2501cc & over class ahead of James Black of Dunedin. He was also second overall in the Race Championship.
Cindy Cooper of Invercargill was crowned the Ladies Champion for the fourth time after winning the Nebulite Windows & Doors 1301-1600cc class, and finishing third in both the Race Championship and the Flying Farewell Championship.
The club also awarded Life Membership to two members – Noel Atley and Paul Rosel – who have both filled a variety of roles at the club over many years, including terms as President.
The RB Munro Trophy for the Workers Award was shared by Allister Robb and Greg McLeod, while Warren Whatson won the Macks Panel & Paint Trophy for the Marshall of the Year.
A Certificate of Appreciation was presented to Stresscrete Southland in recognition of the time the company has donated towards work required at Teretonga Park.
