Kiwi Formula E star Mitch Evans will begin a new chapter in his career after signing a multi-year deal with Opel for the start of the Gen4 era.
The move brings Evans’ decade-long association with Jaguar to an end, with the 32-year-old joining highly-rated Frenchman Théo Pourchaire in Opel’s new Formula E line-up.
Evans arrives as one of the championship’s most experienced drivers and will play a key role as Opel enters the category. The Kiwi has already sampled the new Gen4 machinery, describing the significantly more powerful car as a “monster”.
Opel Team Principal Jörg Schrott said Evans had been the manufacturer’s preferred choice as it looked for an experienced driver to lead its Formula E programme.
“We have secured our dream team,” Schrott said.
“Mitch Evans was the preferred candidate for our Opel GSE Formula E Team from the very beginning. His commitment once again underlines the seriousness of the entire project.”
For Evans, the switch represents his first major change since joining Formula E with Jaguar in 2016.
“I am proud to be an Opel works driver and to be part of this new chapter in Formula E,” Evans said.
After ten years with a manufacturer, it was time for me to take on a fresh challenge. The leap to the Gen4 cars represents the perfect moment to start something new.”
Despite the change of surroundings, Evans’ main objective remains unchanged — becoming Formula E World Champion.
“The world championship title clearly remains the big goal for me; in this respect, I still have a score to settle in Formula E,” he said.
“I want to contribute my experience from ten years of Formula E and play a strong role in the world championship together with Opel and Théo.”
Evans and Pourchaire will spearhead Opel’s challenge when Formula E moves into its new Gen4 era.
