Chaz Mostert topped this weekend’s Perth SuperSprint opening practice, which was interrupted by two red flags at Wanneroo Raceway.

Mostert’s 55.0930-second flyer came early in the 60-minute session, moments before the first stoppage came when Thomas Randle crawled to a stop on the pit straight with a prop shaft failure.

Matt Stone Racing’s Nick Percat was second, 0.1753 seconds behind Mostert, while James Courtney completed the top three, just 0.0026 seconds behind.

ITM Taupo Super400 race winner Andre Heimgartner was the fastest of the five-strong Kiwi contingent in fourth, just over three-tenths off the pace.

Jack Le Brocq was fifth, one place to the good of the quickest Red Bull Ampol Racing entry of Broc Feeney.

Defending champion Brodie Kostecki, Shell V-Power Racing’s Will Davison, Cameron Hill and Tim Slade completed the top ten.

Hill caused a late red flag that ended the session two minutes early, running straight on and into the Turn 3 barrier. He took significant damage to his front left and left his car covered in sand.

The Canberra-born driver exited his vehicle under his own power.

Ryan Wood was the second-best Kiwi in 11th, while Jaxon Evans moved from 23rd to 13th with a late flyer.

Richie Stanaway, who sits fourth in the Driver’s Championship, was 17th, one position ahead of points leader Will Brown. Matt Payne was 21st.

Supercars returns for Practice 2, a 20-minute session, at 1.15 pm NZST on Saturday before timed qualifying for Race 9 at 4.00 pm. The 55-lap opener follows at 7.45 pm.
