Motorsport Diary: Kiwis racing overseas this weekend

It’s a busy weekend ahead with a number of Kiwis competing in the wonderful world of motorsport.

Nick Cassidy will be aiming to continue his form after winning last time out in the DTM, whilst Reid Harker is back for the final round of the GT World Challenge Asia.

In rally, it’s Emma Gilmour taking to the dirts of Chile in the Extreme E, which is free to air to watch!

For our up-and-comers, Harry McDonald will be looking to continue his jaw-dropping form in the GT4 Scandinavia, whilst Louis Sharp will take to the historic Silverstone in British F4.

For all the information you need, including New Zealand times and where to watch, see below. Don’t get caught out by daylight saving also, our times have been adjusted appropriately accounting for that.

Nick Cassidy: DTM- Round 7 at Red Bull Ring

  • Where: Red Bull Ring, Austria
  • Times:
    • Qualifying 1: Saturday 7.55pm
    • Race 1: Saturday 11.15pm
    • Qualifying 2: Sunday 8.55pm
    • Race 2: Monday 12.15am
  • How to watch: Sky Sport Select (Qualifying 1), Sky Sport 2 (Race 1), Sky Sport Popup 1 (600) (Qualifying 2), Sky Sport 5 (Race 2)

Fresh off his maiden DTM victory at Spa-Francorchamps last weekend, Nick Cassidy finds himself back on track just a week later as the championship heads to Austria.

The fast Red Bull Ring should provide some thrilling racing, with the Kiwi racing a Ferrari for Red Bull AlphaTauri AF Corse. He currently sits 16th in the championship after missing some opening races of the season due to Formula E commitments. Another win, or two, in Austria however will see the Kiwi moving forward into the top 10.

Reid Harker: GT World Challenge Asia- Okayama International Circuit

  • Where: Okayama International Circuit, Japan
  • Times:
    • Qualifying: Saturday 12.50am
    • Race 1: Saturday 5.50pm (60 minutes)
    • Race 2: Sunday 3.40pm (60 minutes)
  • How to watch: Live stream

The GT World Challenge Asia reaches the final race of the year this weekend, Reid Harker taking to the track with Setiawan Santoso for Earl Bamber Motorsport Giga Racing in a Porsche 911 GT3 R.

The pair started the season well with a double podium in Malaysia and have since been challenged by a strong field to sit 10th in the driver standings. Harker, however, knows how to win, a strong showing here will see him shoot up the leaderboard to challenge the top five, a compact midfield making for an interesting conclusion to the season.

Emma Gilmour: Extreme E- Antofagasta

  • Where: Antofagasta, Chile
  • Times:
    • Qualifying 1: Sunday 1am
    • Qualifying 2: Sunday 7am
    • Semi-finals: Monday 1am
    • Final: Monday 4am
  • How to watch: TVNZ Duke (023 on Sky, 6 on Freeview)

Emma Gilmour makes a return in Extreme E as the rally series heads to Chile for Round 4 of five in a shortened season. Driving alongside Tanner Foust, Gilmour currently sits eighth of ten teams in the championship. The field, however, is a tough one, with the likes of Carlos Sainz Sr and 9-time WRC champion Sebastian Loeb competing.

Gilmour and Foust have, however, often found them matching the pace with the leaders, a couple of DNF’s early in the season hurting their position. A strong showing here will see the duo shoot up the table to as high as fifth.

Extreme E is broken down into a series of events of a competition weekend. Qualifying consists of a time trial followed by two five-car heats. From here, the six fastest cars will progress to the semis whilst the remaining four will compete in the ‘Crazy Race’, the winner of that qualifying for the final along with the top two from each semi-final.

Harry McDonald: GT4 Scandinavia- Gelleråsen Arena

  • Where: Gelleråsen Arena, Sweden
  • Times:
    • Qualifying: Saturday 7.40pm
    • Race 1: Saturday 9.40pm (60 minutes +1 lap)
    • Race 2: Sunday 12.45am (60 minutes +1 lap)
  • How to watch: Follow live timings and Facebook updates

Coming off a strong weekend at Anderstorp where McDonald finished on the podium in both races, the Kiwi will return to the track for the season concluding event at Gelleråsen Arena, a historic Swedish track.

Racing with Hans Holmlund in a Toyota GT Supra GT4 for Toyota Gazoo Racing Sweden, 19-year-old McDonald will be aiming to replicate the form which has seen him podium in three of the four races completed thus far.

At Spa-Francorchamps he partnered with Tommy Gråberg to take a fourth place followed by a second in the Pro/AM class, before two second placed finishes with Holmlund at Anderstorp last time out in the AM/AM class.

Louis Sharp: British Formula 4- Silverstone

  • Where: Silverstone, UK
  • Times:
    • Qualifying: Saturday 9.25pm
    • Race 1: Sunday 1.40am (pre daylight saving)
    • Race 2: Sunday 9.35pm
    • Race 3: Monday 3.05am
  • How to watch: Facebook updates and YouTube highlights

With only two rounds to go in the British Formula 4, Louis Sharp sits only 21 points off third place in the standings with a good season featuring a number of podiums and a win at Oulton Park earlier this year.

As the youngest driver in the field, Sharp has impressed in his debut season in the series where he races for Carlin. Racing at the iconic, historic Silverstone will be an added bonus for the Christchurch youngster, as will the next round at Brands Hatch (for the second time this season).

The future is bright for the youngster from Christchurch, making him a good driver to follow over the weekend.
