Payne powers to pole at ITM Taupo Super400

Grove Racing’s Matt Payne will start today’s 200 km race at the ITM Taupo Super400 from pole.

The Kiwi, looking to bounce back from 13th in Saturday’s race after spinning at Turn 1, delivered a quick 1:26.8173 to better Broc Feeney by one-hundredth.

Ryan Wood, the only other Kiwi in the Top 10 Shootout, ran wide at the final corner on his lap and will start from tenth.

Defending Champion Brodie Kostecki lines up third, next to Anton De Pasquale, who dropped from provisional pole to fourth.

Thomas Randle set the benchmark at 1:27.3073 as the first runner and was narrowly eclipsed by Le Brocq, with just 0.0182 seconds between the pair.

A monster 1:26.8479 from Kostecki put him ahead of Le Brocq by over four-tenths, and the defending champion gained a place when Tim Slade could only manage a 1:27.3595, the slowest of the four times at that stage.

Feeney would, however, better the Erebus Racing driver’s time by just 0.0180 seconds to sit on provisional pole with five drivers to run.

Wood compromised his lap by running wide at the final corner while looking set for a strong time, losing over a second as he dropped down the order from fifth.

Payne went ahead of the Red Bull entry on his flyer, an advantage of just 0.0126 guaranteeing his place on the front two rows.

Brown was unable to topple the Kiwi’s time and dropped three places to provisionally sit fourth behind his teammate.

Mostert was kept busy battling oversteer and lost significant time on his run, which dropped him from second to eighth, ahead of Wood.

Both would lose ground to De Pasquale, who was also unable to match the pace of those who ran before but slotted into fourth. Less than one-tenth of a second separated the front four.

Saturday’s race winner, Andre Heimgartner, had earlier qualified 11th for the race, ahead of Grove’s Richie Stanaway in 14th and Jaxon Evans in 21st.

Supercars return for their final race at Taupo International Motorsport Park this weekend at 3.05 pm.
