The Porsche 911 GT3 R rennsport doesn’t listen to the rules

If you thought Porsche had run out of ideas on how to revolutionise its best-selling sports car, then you’d be mistaken. Behold, the 911 GT3 R rennsport.

Based on the new 911 GT3 R racecar, the new model variant is being offered as a limited-edition track car that completely disregards any motorsport regulations.

Just 77 of these bad boys will be made, each of which wears a distinct body that has been sculpted in the image of Porsche’s retro models, such as the iconic 935. In fact, this is the “logical successor” to that very car.

The Rennsport wouldn’t be able to lay such a claim without a gargantuan wing though, which we are pleased to reveal that it does. Not only does the spoiler look the part thanks to its seamless integration into the rear bodywork, but it also produces a healthy amount of downforce.

You’ll also notice newly styled cutaways behind the wheels on both the front and rear fenders, the latter leading into a styling line that wraps around the entire rear end. A full-width light bar can also be found at the back, atop an illuminated ‘Porsche’ inscription.

Otherwise, the only parts that haven’t been altered from the original GT3 R are the bonnet and roof.

The interior has also undergone some slight modifications, including the addition of two monitors either side of the driver which provides them with a direct feed from the two fender-mounted cameras instead of having to rely on cumbersome physical wing mirrors.

Special graphics have been installed on the central display, while a limited edition number and silhouette of the car will show on the Rennsport’s instrument panel. The interior ambient lighting also matches that of the colour-adjustable headlights.

All safety features are FIA-compliant, but thanks to the design of the roll cage, Porsche only managed to cram one seat inside – that being for the driver only of course. Sorry passengers.

We mentioned that the Rennsport is a more unhinged model of the standard GT3 R and that’s because it’s free of any motorsport regulations, meaning it makes more power than the actual racecar upon which it is based.

Mounted at the back is a 4.2-litre six-cylinder boxer engine that is capable of revving up to 9400rpm and makes 456kW (40kW more than the GT3 R) thanks to a specially developed set of pistons and camshafts.

Behind the engine sits a six-speed constant-mesh gearbox, controlled by a set of paddles mounted behind the multifunctional steering wheel. Thanks to its Daytona spec gear ratios, the Rennsport is 20km/h faster than the GT3 racecar in sixth at 9000rpm.

Thanks to its racing roots, the chassis is of the same breed you’d find on a GT3 car too. That means there’s double wishbone suspension up front and multi-link suspension at the rear, all dampened by five-way adjustable KW racing shock absorbers.

Once you’ve set the fastest lap possible, a set of aluminium monoblock AP brakes with titanium-backed brake pad plates will safely bring you to a stop.

Without further ado, the price of the Porsche 911 GT3 R rennsport is set at $US1,046,000 ($NZ1,742,191) before any personalisation options are added to the spec sheet.
