The Townsville 500: All you need to know

With a 214 point championship lead over Anton De Pasquale, Shane Van Gisbergen will be aiming for a strong showing at this weekends Townsville 500 to further pull away at the top of the table.

The weekend showcases a wide range of motorsport, including the Supercars, Super2 and 3, Touring Car Masters, Porsche Carrera Cup and the Toyota 86 series.

After failing to record a win for the first time in a race weekend this season at the Merlin Darwin Triple Crown, Van Gisbergen will be relying on history to repeat itself. Triple Eight Engineering have won 20 out of the 34 events that have been run on the Reid Park Street Circuit. The Red Bull Racing driver also had success at last years event, winning race 2.

The Teams Championship is a lot closer, with only 14 points separating leaders Shell V-Power Racing from Red Bull. Youngster Broc Feeney has six more races left to break Scott McLaughlin’s record for the youngest ever Supercars race winner, which will help eliminate this gap for Red Bull.

The Super2 and Super3 cars will be running together in their 21 lap races on Saturday and Sunday, putting a grid in excess of 30 cars on the track at the same time.

The weekend begins on Friday with two practice sessions, with elimination qualifying, a Top 10 Shootout and race on both Saturday and Sunday. Both races are 250km, or 88 laps around the 2.8km circuit.

All races from the weekend, including support categories, will be available to watch on Sky Sports Channel 55.
