Matthew Payne has finished 15th in the first Super2 race at Bathurst after having a tough outing.

Payne dropped two places on the first lap, though he was able to gain them back after the safety car bunched the field back up.

The safety car made an appearance early in the race after David Murphy ended up stuck in the gravel trap at the final corner on lap 3.

There was a second incident between Zane Morse and Super3 driver Paul Boschert, Morse made contact with Boschert as the pair went across the top of the mountain, Boschert ending up stuck in the gravel trap bringing out the second safety car of the race.

Morse had been fighting back through the pack after being forced to come in a fix panel damage in the early laps but was again forced into the pit lane, getting a drive-through penalty for the contact.

After the race got back underway Payne tried to take advantage of the field being bunched up getting into a battle with Tyler Everingham and Jaylyn Robotham.

While the pack saw some good racing it ultimately saw an incident between Payne and Robotham, Payne attempting to pass on the inside of turn 2, while Robotham locked up. The pair ultimately made contact, though both were able to continue in the race.

Race stewards gave Payne a pit lane penalty, which saw him drop back in the field, though he was able to claw back some positions to get to 15th by the checkered flag.

Championship leader Broc Feeney took the race win after starting from pole position, with Jayden Ojeda and Jordan Boys rounding out the podium positions.

The final race of the weekend will get underway at 5.55 pm tomorrow afternoon.
