Shane van Gisbergen fought his way to a 14th-place finish in a demanding NASCAR Cup Series Xfinity 500 at Martinsville Speedway, while William Byron delivered a commanding drive to take victory and secure his place in the Championship 4.

Starting 22nd, Van Gisbergen showed strong race pace early on, steadily working his way into the top half of the field.
The Trackhouse Racing driver finished 12th in Stage 1 and improved to eighth by the end of Stage 2, looking well-positioned for a solid result in his first Cup Series race at Martinsville’s famously tight half-mile circuit.
However, the cooler evening temperatures during the final stage made life difficult for the New Zealander. His No. 88 Chevrolet Camaro struggled to find rear grip and lacked drive off the corners, leaving him unable to maintain momentum on restarts.
Once his tyres came up to temperature, Van Gisbergen’s lap times matched the race leaders, but the pace came too late to make up lost ground.
After 500 laps of intense short-track racing, Van Gisbergen crossed the line 14th, a solid recovery but short of his expectations.
“Good job, guys,” he told his Trackhouse Racing crew over the radio post-race.
“Our cars are getting better, and you guys are getting me through it. Awesome job. We’re getting there. I feel like this result should have been better, but that’s all right.”

While the Kiwi focused on progress, the spotlight belonged to William Byron, who delivered a near-perfect performance when it mattered most.
Entering the penultimate round of the season in a must-win situation, the Hendrick Motorsports driver led 304 of 500 laps and swept the first two stages to seal an emphatic victory, his third at Martinsville and 16th career Cup win.
Byron’s path to victory wasn’t without drama. With 44 laps remaining, he made a decisive move on Ryan Blaney, nudging the Penske Ford out of the groove to retake the lead.
From there, the No. 24 Chevrolet remained untouchable, surviving a late restart to win by 0.717 seconds and punch his ticket to next weekend’s Championship 4 finale at Phoenix Raceway.
“I watched my first NASCAR race up there in the Martinsville crowd at the start/finish line,” Byron said in victory lane.
“To come here and win when we needed it most is unbelievable. These guys have worked so hard, and to get this done after the last couple of tough weeks means everything.”
Blaney, who also needed to win to advance, finished a close second after leading 177 laps, while Chase Elliott rounded out the podium in third.
Ross Chastain took fourth as the highest-finishing non-playoff driver, and Byron’s teammate Kyle Larson came home fifth, a result strong enough to earn him the final Championship 4 spot on points.
The four drivers who will battle for the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series championship at Phoenix are Byron, Larson, Denny Hamlin, and Chase Briscoe. Eliminated from title contention were Blaney, Elliott, Christopher Bell, and Joey Logano.
For Van Gisbergen, the Martinsville weekend was another valuable step in his adaptation to full-time Cup Series racing, and a reminder of how fine the margins are on NASCAR’s shortest tracks.
Despite the frustration of finishing outside the top ten, the Kiwi’s steady progress and composure through a physical race underscored his growing comfort in the American stock car scene.
The 2025 NASCAR Cup Series will conclude next Monday (NZST) at Phoenix Raceway, where Byron, Larson, Hamlin, and Briscoe will fight for championship glory.
