Velocity News welcomes new Editor

Velocity News and publisher Mark Petch are thrilled to announce the appointment of Jayden Aben as their new Editor.

Aben is best known for his popular Facebook page, ‘The Motorsport Kiwi’, and has been working on the NextGen New Zealand Championship social media team this season.

He replaces departing Editor Matthew Sampson, who is moving overseas.

“I am thrilled to team up with Mark and the crew at velocitynews.co.nz. I’ve poured my heart into running The Motorsport Kiwi for the past few years, sharing my passion for New Zealand racing drivers worldwide.

“So, getting this opportunity is a significant turning point for me. Working in motorsport has always been a dream, and I’m thrilled to finally have the chance to share the stories and updates of Kiwis, both locally and internationally.

“As a dedicated Kiwi Motorsport enthusiast, I’ve long admired Velocity as a hub for all things local motorsport. Joining forces with Mark, who shares my vision, is incredibly exciting.

“Stepping into Matthew Sampson’s shoes won’t be easy; he’s done a stellar job shaping Velocity into what it is today. I aim to honour his work and contribute to its growth. I extend my heartfelt thanks to Mark and the team for this opportunity. I can’t wait to dive in!”

Sampson has worked with Velocity News for close to three years, writing nearly 2000 articles for the outlet during that time.

“A big thank you to Mark and those who have helped me in this journey,” he said.

“After over a decade in the hospitality industry, during the Covid lockdowns, I took some time to evaluate. I went back to university to study journalism a year later, joining the Velocity News team while working on my post-grad.

“This has been an incredible experience, and I have some very fond memories along the way. The final round of Supercars at Pukekohe, the ITM Taupo Super400, the North Island Endurance Series and more.

“A big thank you to my wife and family for their support over these few years. My next journey awaits outside motorsport, but I look forward to watching as a fan with my son, due on April 17 this year.

“Jayden brings a positive attitude and immense knowledge to the role, and I have no doubt he will build on what Velocity News is, taking it to the next level.”

Petch remains as the publisher and owner of Velocity News and will work with Aben to integrate him into the team.

“This is an extremely exciting appointment, and I’m thrilled Jayden has joined this team,” he said.

“He is passionate, knowledgeable, and brings a positive attitude to the role that will benefit not only Velocity News but also New Zealand motorsport.

“A big thank you to Matthew Sampson for his time in the role over these years. All the best on your next journey.”
