Waters on pole for Perth finale, Wood takes grid penalty

Cam Waters has qualified on the pole for Race 2 of the Perth SuperSprint with a 54.5545-second flyer in the final segment of the 30-minute, three-part session.

Saturday’s race-winner, Chaz Mostert, joins the Tickford driver on the front row, ahead of Championship leader Will Brown and Thomas Randle.

Ryan Wood qualified as the fastest Kiwi in fourth but received a three-place grid penalty for impeding Mark Winterbottom and Macauley Jones in Q1.

The penalty relegates Wood to seventh, next to Anton De Pasquale and behind Will Davison and Brodie Kostecki.

David Reynolds and Tim Slade complete the top ten.

Mostert led the way in Q1 with a 54.6132-second flyer, topping Nick Percat by 0.0705 seconds. Matt Payne was the best Kiwi in sixth, one place to the good of Ryan Wood, having led at the midway point.

Jaxon Evans was a commendable tenth, and Richie Stanaway and Andre Heimgartner progressed to Q2 in 19th and 20th, respectively, with the latter only scraping through when his final lap came in after the chequered flag.

Wood had a brief off-track venture late in the session and was seen to impede Mark Winterbottom and Macauley Jones, who were on flyers, when rejoining.

Davison’s 54.6004 was the fastest in Q2, bettering Brown and teammate De Pasquale by one-tenth.

Wood survived as the only Kiwi to progress from eighth, while Broc Feeney and Payne were the surprise eliminations in 12th and 16th.

Heimgartner was 15th, less than one-tenth off making the top ten in a tight mid-field, while Stanaway was 17th and Evans 19th.

Less than three-tenths of a second separated 10th-placed Randle and 20th-placed James Golding.

Davison’s 54.7512 was the best of the first runs in Q3, with Mostert, De Pasquale, Waters and Wood making for an all-Ford top five.

Both Shell V-Power entries remained in their garages for the final runs with no tyres spare, and they were quickly eclipsed by those who returned to the track.

Waters, Brown, Wood, Mostert, Kostecki and Randle made up the top five after the penultimate flyers, with Mostert jumping to second on his final lap when the chequered flew.

That relegated Brown to third, ahead of Wood, who received a penalty for his Q1 incident.

Race 10, and the final of the Perth SuperSprint, begins at 7.45 pm.
