Feeney tops Stanaway in final Bathurst 1000 practice

Red Bull’s Broc Feeney has topped the sixth and final practice at Bathurst in a 60-minute session that was interrupted by three red flags.

Feeney’s 2:06.1274 was three-tenths quicker than departing Penrite Racing driver Richie Stanway, who was in turn two-tenths ahead of Jack Le Brocq, who completed the top three.

Provisional pole-sitter Matt Payne was one of just three primary drivers who did not share their car with their co-driver in the session and completed 22 laps to go seventh fastest.

Thomas Randle, who does not feature in this evening’s Top 10 Shootout, was fourth, ahead of Chaz Mostert and Cameron Waters, respectively.

Will Brown, Andre Heimgartner, and Brodie Kostecki completed the top ten, which featured nine of the ten drivers who will return for the shootout. The other, Anton De Pasquale, was 11th.

The first ten minutes of the session were spent practicing the Full Course Yellow procedures which caused grief for drivers at Sandown. Teams also used the early time to practice pit stop procedures, including driver and brake changes.

Tony D’Alberto (De Pasquale) triggered the first red flag, running onto the gravel trap and beaching at Turn 1 at the 10 minute mark.

Jaxon Evans repeated the incident at the same place 10 minutes later to bring the second delay.

The third and final red flag came as a result of a crash for Aaron Love at The Cutting in the final 17 minutes, with the #3 driver spinning and backing the Cooldrive Mustang into the barriers, severely damaging it’s rear.

He returned to the garage under his own power, and is not set to feature again until Sunday’s warm-up for the race, giving the team ample to repair the car.

Feeney’s best lap came in the final minutes, as did Stanaway’s, as the fastest qualifiers put in simulation laps ahead of this evening’s Top 10 Shootout.

The Top 10 Shootout begins at 7.05 pm NZST and will be shown live on Sky Sport.
