Reports have emerged that Formula 1 is working on the introduction of an all-women feeder series which may begin as early as next year.
The reports come through ESPN, who reveal sources recognise plans are in the works. They also revealed that the grid is expected to be made up of upwards of 15 drivers in the first season.
It is seen the series will be targeted towards younger women, the intention being of potential promotion to F3, and F2, should performance be worthy. It is expected F4 machinery will be the cars of choice.
Whilst no concrete plans have been confirmed, it’s been no secret that the series has been working on increasing female participation in the sport.
A spokesperson for F1 confirmed this, stating “we are committed to ensuring greater opportunity for talented women drivers to progress and reach the top levels.”
A number of competitors have also voiced their concern at the lack of women competitors in the top categories, including Sir Lewis Hamilton earlier this week.
“There has not been enough focus on women in sport for the whole of F1’s life,” he said. “There is not enough emphasis on it now. They’re not magnifying enough the great work that is being done there.
“There is not enough representation across the board within our industry. There is not really a pathway for those young, amazing drivers to even get to F1.
“Then you have some people who say, ‘We’re never going to see a female F1 driver’. That’s not a good narrative to be putting out. So, I think we need to be doing more.”
The last time a female entered in a Formula 1 race was when Lella Lombardi competed at the 1976 Austrian Grand Prix.
The new series will not be affiliated with the W Series which is seen as for more established drivers who may be too old for F3, F2 and F1 development.
The W Series itself is in financial jeopardy, the last two rounds of 2022 cancelled due to cash flow struggles.
Jamie Chadwick won the 2022 W Series, as she did in 2019 and 2021.
