Taupo International Motorsport Park track owner Tony Quinn is confident Supercars will return to New Zealand next year, touting a late April timeslot. An announcement on this is expected before the end of this month.
Speaking to Australian publishers Speedcafe, Quinn revealed he is optimistic about the Central North Island’s chances of being included on the 2024 calendar.
“I’d be shocked and stunned if we’re not going to New Zealand next year,” he said. “We’ve done everything we can, and Supercars is doing everything they can.
“There’d be a revolution if Supercars doesn’t go back to New Zealand. We should know by the end of the month.”
While Hampton Downs was initially tipped as the preferred venue, interest has since shifted to Taupo, which is seen as having better accessibility and infrastructure for a large turnout.
The other element that has been of concern was funding, with previous supporters Auckland Unlimited unable to contribute following the closure of the region’s sole track, Pukekohe Park Raceway.
It’s believed government funding will be provided to enable the event to take place.
Speedcafe also went on to reveal the expected date for the New Zealand round is April 26-28, some five months earlier than Pukekohe’s traditional slot towards the end of the season.
The revelations also come against speculation Supercars will expand their calendars from a 12-round season to a maximum of 15, with a support appearance at the Singapore Grand Prix sought.
