Antonelli wins the Canadian Grand Prix as Lawson defends hard for P7

Mercedes sensation Kimi Antonelli claimed yet another Formula 1 victory in an eventful and unpredictable Canadian Grand Prix, while Kiwi driver Liam Lawson delivered another gritty drive to secure seventh place after spending the closing laps under relentless pressure.

Rain showers before the start created difficult conditions around Montreal, forcing the field to complete an extra formation lap before the race could officially begin. Drama struck before the lights even went out, with Arvid Lindblad unable to leave his grid box after reporting a clutch issue that prevented him from selecting a gear. The Racing Bulls rookie, who had qualified an impressive ninth, was pushed back to the garage and became the race’s first retirement before the start.

Lawson lined up 12th on the grid for the 68-lap race, while Mercedes locked out the front row with George Russell on pole position ahead of teammate Antonelli. Lando Norris started third alongside championship leader Oscar Piastri, with Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, Isack Hadjar, Charles Leclerc, Franco Colapinto and Nico Hulkenberg completing the top 10 after Lindblad’s withdrawal.

When the race finally got underway, Norris made a brilliant launch on wet intermediate tyres, sweeping past both Mercedes cars into Turn 1 to take the lead. Behind him, several drivers gambled on slick tyres despite the damp conditions, including Lawson, who immediately made progress on medium tyres and climbed into ninth by the end of the opening lap.

A LEAD CHANGE OFF THE START! 🤯

The crossover to slicks quickly became the key storyline. Piastri was among the first to abandon intermediates, pitting after the opening lap for medium tyres and dropping to the rear of the field. Norris soon followed, surrendering the lead to Antonelli, while Russell tucked in close behind his teammate.

Lawson’s early tyre gamble paid off handsomely as the Kiwi continued to move forward. By Lap 2, he had climbed to eighth place, sitting directly behind Colapinto while those ahead were running soft-compound tyres.

The race settled briefly before another major moment on Lap 7. Russell slipped past Antonelli for the lead, but the young Italian nearly lost the car moments later after a huge lock-up while trying to avoid contact with the back of his teammate. Antonelli ran off track but somehow gathered it up and rejoined without losing position.

Further drama unfolded on Lap 12. Antonelli fought back past Russell to retake the lead, only for Russell to respond immediately and reclaim first place. At the same time, local favourite Alex Albon retired after a collision with Piastri, bringing out yellow flags. Piastri was forced back into the pits for a replacement front wing after suffering damage in the incident.

Meanwhile, Lawson and Hulkenberg were noted by FIA stewards for allegedly being out of position at the safety car line during the formation lap.

By Lap 21, Mercedes had completely controlled proceedings at the front. Russell led Antonelli by just four-tenths of a second, while Verstappen sat a distant third, nearly seven seconds behind. Hamilton loomed directly behind the Red Bull driver as the fight for the podium intensified.

Antonelli reclaimed the lead on Lap 22 as the Mercedes pair continued their private battle out front. Further back, Lawson remained solidly inside the top 10 in eighth, although he had dropped more than eight seconds behind Colapinto. Hadjar, meanwhile, enjoyed a comfortable run in sixth with a significant gap behind him.

The intra-team battle between Mercedes drivers soon boiled over. Antonelli made a small mistake and ran wide, briefly allowing Russell through, but the Italian immediately fought back. The pair rubbed wheels as Antonelli attempted to hold the inside line, forcing him off the track. Race control ruled Antonelli had gained an advantage by leaving the circuit and instructed him to hand the position back.

Antonelli was furious over team radio, arguing Russell had pushed him off and insisting the corner belonged to him because he was ahead. Despite his protests, he reluctantly ceded the lead.

Elsewhere, Fernando Alonso retired after Aston Martin discovered a problem with his seat during a pit stop.

The complexion of the race changed dramatically moments later when Russell came to a stop with a major mechanical problem while leading. The Mercedes driver ran onto the grass before stopping trackside with a power unit failure, cutting short what had looked like a potential victory.

Antonelli inherited the lead once more, with Verstappen promoted to second as the virtual safety car was deployed. The neutralisation triggered a wave of pit stops, including Lawson, who pitted from seventh place after benefiting from Russell’s retirement. The Kiwi emerged still seventh on a fresh set of soft tyres.

At half distance, Antonelli held a 4.6-second advantage over Verstappen, while Hamilton sat third. Hadjar and Leclerc completed the top five, with Colapinto, Lawson, Pierre Gasly, Norris and Carlos Sainz rounding out the top 10.

Another retirement followed soon after when Norris, who had been chasing Lawson for seventh and closing rapidly, suddenly pulled off the circuit with a suspected gearbox failure. Reporting that “something is broken” over team radio, Norris parked the McLaren behind the barriers and became the fifth retirement of the race.

On Lap 43, Sergio Perez also dropped out after bringing his Cadillac into the pits with severe front suspension damage.

The battle for the podium intensified in the closing stages. With six laps remaining, Hamilton launched a decisive move on Verstappen, outbraking the reigning world champion to steal second place.

Out front, Antonelli remained untouchable. The young Mercedes driver managed the final laps superbly to secure another Formula 1 victory by 10.7 seconds over Hamilton, while Verstappen completed the podium in third. Leclerc and Hadjar rounded out the top five finishers.

Lawson’s race, however, was far from over. In the closing laps, the Kiwi found himself under immense pressure from Gasly and was forced into full defensive mode. Lap after lap, Gasly filled Lawson’s mirrors, but the Racing Bulls driver refused to crack, expertly placing his car to deny every opportunity.

After a tense final stint, Lawson held on to claim seventh place and six valuable championship points in another determined performance. Gasly crossed the line eighth ahead of Sainz and Oliver Bearman, while Piastri recovered from his earlier incidents to finish just outside the points in 11th.

Only 16 cars reached the chequered flag in an eventful Canadian Grand Prix that delivered changing conditions, fierce wheel-to-wheel battles and multiple mechanical failures.

Formula 1 now heads to the streets of Monaco for the next round of the championship on June 5-7.
