Brown recovers from early spin to win Adelaide finale

Will Brown recovered from a Lap 9 spin to cap off his championship-winning season with a thrilling victory in the final race of the 2024 Supercars campaign in Adelaide.

Brown sat in 22nd place after he was turned by Brodie Kostecki early in proceedings, but had fought his way back into contention as those around him faltered.

The decisive moment came with 16 laps to run, when Chaz Mostert and Broc Feeney tangled while battling for the lead. Feeney, who had a 15-second time penalty outstanding for an unsafe release in pit lane, tapped the WAU Mustang into a spin at Turn 6, which gave him a second 15-second addition.

The damage to Mostert’s car made him easy pickings for Brown to overturn a 20-second advantage, which he was able to do over the following laps to take the net lead with 12 laps to run.

Feeney was first across the line, but his post-race penalty relegated him to seventh, giving his teammate the win.

Remarkably, Mostert held on for second, just ahead of Thomas Randle, who led home a train of cars that included Will Davison, Nick Percat, Kostecki, Feeney, James Golding, and Andre Heimgartner, who was the first Kiwi home in ninth.

Ryan Wood enjoyed a strong start to the race but was turned by Anton De Pasquale while running fourth shortly after Brown spun. De Pasquale was made to serve a 15-second penalty during his first stop for causing the collision.

Wood, too, fought his way back through the field, but returned serve on De Pasquale in the closing stage to incur a 15-second penalty of his own, which relegated him to 19th at the chequered flag.

Matt Payne was the last driver home in 23rd, losing several laps on the field following a Lap 3 tangle with Nick Percat that left his Penrite Mustang buried in the Turn 11 tyre barriers. His 23rd placing worked in favour of Randle, who climbed to fifth in championship at the Kiwi’s expense.

Fellow New Zealanders Jaxon Evans and Richie Stanaway did not start the race, having sustained concussion-like symptoms following separate crashes at Turn 8 over the weekend.
