Chris Symon dominates Manfeild: Championship decider looms at Taupo

Chris Symon has cemented his dominance in the 2024/2025 NZ Formula First Championship, sweeping all three races at Round 6 held at Manfeild – Circuit Chris Amon.

This stellar performance has significantly extended his championship lead, placing him firmly in control as the series heads to the final round at Taupo International Motorsport Park at the end of April.

Symon’s masterful display at Manfeild showcased his adaptability and racecraft as he navigated various challenging conditions and intense battles. His three victories bring him closer to an unprecedented fifth consecutive championship title. This feat would solidify his place in New Zealand motorsport history.

This potential fifth title also holds a special significance, as it would see Chris surpass his father, Ross Symon, in championship wins, marking a historic moment for the Symon racing legacy.

Behind Symon, the battle for the remaining podium positions is heating up. Liam Foster sits in second place, while Liam Nicholson, demonstrating remarkable resilience, has surged back into contention for third place after a dramatic crash earlier in the season.

“After the crash at R3, I thought we were out,” Nicholson stated.

“We fixed the car and came back strong with some good finishes and some wins. With the battle for 3rd in the championship going into the last round, it will be a fight to the final race with Jensen and Harry.”

The fight for third place is close, and the final round in Taupo will see a three-way battle between Jensen Foster, Liam Nicholson, and Harry Scott.

Only 7 points separate these three drivers and a place on the podium. Liam’s momentum is strong, but the others won’t let him have it his way once the cars hit the track at the finale.

Meanwhile, the Rookie of the Year title is also poised for a thrilling conclusion. Yoshi Comeskey, racing for Sabre Motorsport, has managed to establish a slight points advantage in the rookie standings, but the competition remains fierce.

“I feel confident in myself and the team and have a clear goal of finishing every race in Taupo to secure the rookie championship. I’m looking forward to driving a new track with so many other rookies. We will see who can adapt to the track and conditions quickly.” Said Comeskey.

The Taupo round promises to be a spectacular finale, with championships on the line and a mix of experienced veterans and eager rookies vying for victory.

This will be the first time we’ve been to Taupo this season, adding an element of the unknown to the final round. The racing will be close, with the championship and rookie championship still to be decided.

The motorsport community is eagerly anticipating the final showdown. Symon aims to seal his fifth title, Nicholson, Foster, and Scott will battle for third, and Comeskey seeks to secure his rookie crown.

Can anyone catch the young gun? Four races and 300 points are still up for grabs.

The action at Taupo International Motorsport Park is set to be unmissable. Racing kicks off on Saturday, 26 April, and the championship wraps up on Sunday afternoon.
