Feeney wins over Brown as Payne & Waters crash out of lead in Melbourne

Broc Feeney has led home teammate Will Brown for a Triple Eight one-two after Matt Payne and Cam Waters crashed out while battling for the lead on Lap 2.

A lengthy delay following the incident made the race a time-certain affair. Only ten laps were completed, half of which were under caution.

Waters and Payne had exchanged places over the opening laps, with the Tickford Mustang taking the lead through Turn 1 off the start and the Penrite Mustang slotting in behind.

Payne ran on the rear of Waters for the opening circuit and a half before sneaking into the lead at Turn 11 on Lap 2. He then went about covering, and Waters gave him a series of nudges through Turn 13 that ran him wide.

Feeney emerged up the inside as Payne veered back towards the racing line, connecting with Waters on the outside and sending him into the barriers. The collision tore the Kiwi’s left rear tyre off the wheel rim, pitching him into a wild spin out of the lead, hitting the barriers rear-first, facing the wrong way

Waters exited his vehicle first and exchanged “pleasantries” with the Kiwi from Payne’s passenger side door before slamming it shut and storming off to pit lane.

On investigation, officials called for no further action, deeming “neither driver was wholly to blame” as a lengthy caution followed to remove both vehicles, which were extensively damaged.

Red Bull assumed a one-two, and Feeney led Brown off the Lap 7 restart, while Mostert had recovered to third following a poor start, ahead of David Reynolds and Jack Le Brocq.

Stanaway took over as the top Kiwi in eighth, one place ahead of Wood.

Feeney and Brown ran line-astern over the following circuits, with Mostert matching the duo’s pace.

With time certainty a factor, the white flag was waved at the start of Lap 10, and Mostert and Brown ran side-by-side through Turn 4, with the Red Bull driver retaining the position.

Feeney pulled to a 1.79-second advantage to take the win over his teammate, who kept Mostert at bay to secure a one-two for Red Bull.

Reynolds crossed the line fourth, ahead of Jack Le Brocq and Todd Hazelwood.

Stanaway finished seventh as the top Kiwi, ahead of Tim Slade and Percat, while Wood went on to secure his first career Supercars top-ten finish.

Jaxon Evans came home in 18th, while Andre Heimgartner was 20th, having been run wide through Turn 6 on Lap 1 and dropping to the rear of the field.

Supercars return for one final race in Melbourne at 12.25 pm on Sunday, ahead of the Australian Grand Prix.
