Lewis withdraws from opening WorldWCR rounds due to ongoing recovery

New Zealand motorcycle racer Avalon Lewis has confirmed she will withdraw from the opening rounds of the 2026 FIM Women’s Circuit Racing World Championship as she continues to recover from injuries sustained in a crash earlier this year.

Lewis has been dealing with ongoing headaches and related side effects following the incident, leaving her short of the physical condition required to compete at a world championship level.

“After a crash earlier this year, I have been suffering headaches and other ongoing side effects from the incident,” Lewis said.

“This means I’ve had to withdraw from the opening rounds of WorldWCR. I’m still not at 100%, and it would not be productive to race at world championship level in my current state.”

The decision comes as a significant setback for the Kiwi rider, who has spent the past several seasons building toward her WorldWCR campaign. Despite the disappointment, Lewis remains focused on her long-term recovery and a potential return later in the season.

“It’s been a really tough pill to swallow. We have worked so hard over the past couple of years towards this season, but ideally I’ll be back later in the year at 100% fitness to show what we can do,” she added.

Lewis also acknowledged the overwhelming support she has received during a challenging period, thanking her team and key backers for standing by her.

“Sorry for being quiet online and in person — the race track is a bit overwhelming at the moment. Huge thanks to the Carl Cox Motorsport team and sponsors, especially Carl, Rodney, Ken and Aaron Slight, for the support. Also, thanks to my family and to Shoei Helmets, RST, Yamaha, Race Supplies and a host of other sponsors who had rallied support to get things underway over the next few months.”

The 2026 WorldWCR season will begin without one of New Zealand’s rising talents on the grid, but Lewis remains determined to return when fully fit and ready to compete at her best.

Sorry to hear, but head injuries are no joke so take your time and come back when you are fully recovered.

    Best wishes from Auckland NZ
