Double Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso has unveiled the livery he will sport in his third attempt at the Indianapolis 500 later this year driving for the Arrow McLaren SP team.
Alonso has had two turbulent Indy 500 campaigns in the past, suffering engine trouble in 2017 with Andretti Autosport before failing to qualify in 2019 in a hastily put-together McLaren entry.
This year’s event will mark the Spaniard’s third attempt to complete the coveted Triple Crown by adding an Indy 500 triumph to his Monaco Grand Prix and 24 Hours of Le Mans victories.
2020 will see Alonso have the backing of Ruoff Mortgage in a largely white car with matte green patches.
The traditional McLaren papaya orange which Alonso sported in both of his previous two Indy 500s can be seen on each of the two wing mirrors.
“I’m very happy to finally see the car which I will race in the Indianapolis 500,” said Alonso.
“We had to wait longer than usual to release the livery but that means that engines will be starting soon in Indianapolis.”
McLaren has teamed with Arrow Schmidt Peterson to run its first full IndyCar season in 2020 with Oliver Askew and Patricio O’Ward.
The duo were immediately on the pace at the season-opening Texas Motor Speedway and a debut win for the outfit seems not far out of question.
The Indy 500 has been pushed back to August 23 after the global pandemic caused a reshuffling of the series calendar.
The race has been confirmed to proceed with fans but only at 50% capacity in a bid to minimise the risk of community transmission of coronavirus.
