KIWIS RACING ABROAD | JULY 4-7 WEEKEND PREVIEW đ
Itâs another massive weekend for Kiwi motorsport, with 20 drivers representing New Zealand across 13 categories worldwide, from high-speed circuits in the UK to the unforgiving streets of Thailand and the gruelling rally stages of Japan and Australia.
All eyes turn to Silverstone for the British Grand Prix, where Liam Lawson returns to the Formula 1 grid with Racing Bulls after his career-best finish in F1 in Austria last weekend.
Heâs joined at the historic circuit by fellow Kiwi Louis Sharp, who continues his rookie Formula 3 campaign with Rodin Motorsport.
In the U.S., itâs a packed schedule at Mid-Ohio with three major series in town. Scott Dixon, Scott McLaughlin, and Marcus Armstrong line up in IndyCarâs 10th round of the season, while Callum Hedge is back in action in Indy NXT.
In USF Pro 2000, Jacob Douglas and Sebastian Manson are both set for a doubleheader weekend.
Shane van Gisbergen is pulling double duty once again, tackling the tricky Chicago Street Course in both the NASCAR Xfinity and Cup Series. Heâll drive for JR Motorsports in Xfinity and Trackhouse Racing in the Cup Series, aiming to build on his growing street course reputation after his win in Mexico just over two weeks ago.
Thereâs also some midweek action Stateside, with both Van Gisbergen and McLaughlin set to race in Round 7 of the Cook Out Summer Shootout at Charlotte Motor Speedway in the US Legend Car Series, an event thatâs quickly become a fun, yet competitive fixture for both Kiwis.
Thereâs rally action on both sides of the Tasman. Hayden Paddon and John Kennard headline the entry list for Rally Queensland, the third round of the Australian Rally Championship. Stewart Reid and Bella Haggarty join them, while Zeal Jones and Bayden Thomson continue their campaign in Japanâs Rally Kamui, part of the Morizo Challenge Cup.
Elsewhere in Europe, Zack Scoular takes on the famous Monza circuit in Round 4 of the Eurocup-3 season, while while Jono Lester suits up for the 2025 Creventic 12 Hours of Paul Ricard. Heâll share the #42 Prime Speed Sport Lamborghini HuracĂĄn GT3 Evo 2 with fellow Kiwi Mana Malmezac, Miika Panu and Nick Foster, tackling the demanding day-to-night endurance race against a stacked GT3 field including François BĂ©ziac, driving the #72 Juta Racing Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo I in the Am class.
Over in Thailand, Brock Gilchrist and Chris Van Der Drift return to the streets of Bangsaen for Rounds 8 and 9 of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia and Round 2 of the TSS Supercar GT3 Calendar.
Check out our detailed weekend preview below for everything you need to know, including session times, how to watch, and whoâs racing where.
Liam Lawson â FIA Formula 1 World Championship

Liam Lawson heads to Silverstone this weekend riding high after a breakthrough drive at the Austrian Grand Prix, where he brought home a career-best sixth-place finish.
It was a performance full of maturity and composure from the 23-year-old Kiwi, who not only stayed out of trouble amid first-lap carnage that eliminated Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli but also executed a bold one-stop strategy to near perfection.
He briefly ran as high as third during the pit cycle and held his nerve late in the race to fend off pressure from the likes of Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon.
Lawson was the lone Racing Bulls scorer on the day, with teammate Isack Hadjar recovering from an early pit stop to finish 12th, just outside the points. It was a strong overall showing for the team, but Lawsonâs result was the standout, cementing his growing reputation as a calm and clever operator in the midfield battle.
F1 Austria Recap HERE
Now, the paddock shifts to Silverstone, a circuit Lawson knows well from his junior career. Heâs enjoyed plenty of success there in the past, with multiple podiums and a win across F3 and F2.
With confidence high and momentum finally starting to build in his debut season, heâll be hoping to keep that form rolling this weekend in front of another packed European crowd.
Louis Sharp â FIA Formula 3 World Championship

- Where? Silverstone Circuit, United Kingdom
- NZ Times:
- Practice: Friday 7:45 PM
- Qualifying: Saturday 1:00 AM
- Sprint Race: Saturday 8:15 PM
- Feature Race: Sunday 8:30 PM
- How to Watch? Sky Sports / F1 TV
It was a tough outing for Louis Sharp at the Red Bull Ring last weekend, with the young Kiwi enduring his first retirement of the 2025 Formula 3 season after getting caught up in a chaotic sprint race incident.
After a promising start to qualifying where he briefly ran inside the top ten, Sharp ultimately ended up 21st on the grid for Sundayâs main race after struggling to improve on his second run.
That put him on the back foot heading into the weekendâs two races, but things went from bad to worse when he was an innocent victim in a multi-car tangle on Lap 2 of the sprint. Pushed off into the barriers, his race was over almost before it began.
The Feature Race offered a chance to regroup, and Sharp quietly chipped away to finish where he started in 18th, picking up a handful of positions early before settling into a midfield battle that yielded few overtaking chances.
It wasnât the kind of weekend the 18-year-old had hoped for, especially after a strong start to his rookie campaign with Rodin Motorsport. He now sits 21st in the championship on 11 points heading into Round 7 at Silverstone.
F3 Austria Recap HERE
Thereâs reason to be optimistic, Silverstone is a track Sharp knows well from his time racing in British F4, where he was a proven front-runner. Heâll be eyeing up a bounce-back weekend on familiar ground, looking to get back into the points and re-establish the early-season momentum thatâs marked him as one to watch in this yearâs competitive F3 field.
Scott McLaughlin, Scott Dixon & Marcus Armstrong – NTT IndyCar Series

- Where? Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Lexington, Ohio
- NZ Times:
- Practice 1: Saturday 8:30 AM
- Practice 2: Sunday 2:30 AM
- Qualifying: Sunday 6:30 AM
- Race: Monday 5:00 AM
- How to Watch? Sky Sports
After a rollercoaster outing at Road America, New Zealandâs IndyCar trio returns to the track this weekend for Round 10 at Mid-Ohio, each with something to prove.
Marcus Armstrong will arrive with confidence after claiming a breakthrough fifth-place finish last time out, marking the best result of his IndyCar career so far. The Meyer Shank Racing driver quietly navigated the chaos to work his way up the order in the closing stages, displaying maturity and racecraft that hint at even bigger results still to come.
Scott Dixon was left to rue what might have been. Starting from the very back after a qualifying penalty, the Chip Ganassi driver stormed through the field, led more laps than anyone, and was on course for a remarkable win, only to run out of fuel with two laps to go. He eventually crossed the line in ninth, but his drive was one of the standout performances of the season so far.
Scott McLaughlin showed early promise, leading the race for Team Penske in the opening laps and running inside the top ten for much of the day. However, a strategic error and a tough restart dropped him back, and he ultimately finished 12th. Since then, heâs stayed race-sharp by competing in the U.S. Legend Car Series, squeezing in extra seat time ahead of this weekendâs return to open-wheel action.
IndyCar Road America Recap HERE
All three drivers will be eager to reset and go again at Mid-Ohio, a technical and flowing circuit that rewards rhythm, tyre management, and clean execution. Dixon is a six-time winner here, McLaughlin claimed pole in 2022 and a podium in 2023, and Armstrong will be hoping to continue building on his momentum at Road America.
Callum Hedge – Indy NXT

- Where? Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Lexington, Ohio
- NZ Times:
- Practice 1: Saturday 7:00 AM
- Practice 2: Sunday 12:30 AM
- Qualifying Group 1: Sunday 5:30 AM
- Qualifying Group 2: Sunday 5:48 AM
- Race: Monday 2:30 AM

Callum Hedge returns to action this weekend at Mid-Ohio off the back of another solid drive at Road America, where he brought home sixth place to notch his fifth top-ten finish of the 2025 Indy NXT season.
The 20-year-old Kiwi, driving for Abel Motorsports, showed strong pace all weekend, running in the top five throughout practice and qualifying seventh, matching his starting spot from the previous round. After a clean start, he made early moves forward and spent much of the race pressuring the top five, ultimately crossing the line just four-tenths behind Myles Rowe in sixth.
With the push-to-pass system unavailable, overtaking was tough, but Hedgeâs consistency and racecraft continued to shine through. That result keeps him seventh in the standings and chipping away at the points gap to those ahead, with a tight battle forming in the midfield.
Callum Hedge Indy NXT Road America Recap HERE
As the series heads to the technical Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course this weekend, Hedge will be the lone Kiwi on the grid, with Liam Sceats unfortunately not competing in Round 8.
Liam Sceats Indy NXT Road America Recap HERE
While the absence of his Kiwi compatriot will be felt, Hedge has proven himself as a reliable front-runner this season and will be aiming to keep the momentum rolling as the second half of the year kicks into gear.
Jacob Douglas & Sebastian Manson – USF Pro 2000

- Where? Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Lexington, Ohio
- NZ Times:
- Test Session 1: Friday 6:00 AM
- Test Session 2: Friday 9:00 AM
- Practice: Saturday 1:45 AM
- Qualifying: Saturday 4:15 AM
- Race 1: Sunday 3:55 AM
- Race 2: Sunday 9:15 AM
- How to Watch? USF Pro Championships Youtube
Jacob Douglas and Sebastian Manson are back in action this weekend at Mid-Ohio, with Rounds 13 and 14 of the USF Pro 2000 Championship coming up after a busy triple-header at Road America.
Douglas (Pabst Racing) had one of his strongest weekend of the season so far, collecting two podium finishes and showing he has the pace to run at the front. A third and a second across the opening two races marked a big step forward, and even after getting tagged and sent down the order in Race 3, he recovered well to finish eighth.
It was a solid weekend from the Christchurch driver, and one heâll be hoping to build on at Mid-Ohio with Pabst Racing.
For Manson (TJ Speed Motorsports), it was a tougher run. He was caught up in contact in Race 1, suffered mechanical issues in Race 2, and didnât get a clean shot until the final race, where he came home 13th.
It wasnât the weekend he wouldâve hoped for, but it was another chance to gain experience and learn in whatâs been a challenging but valuable rookie season.
USF Pro 2000 Road America Recap HERE
Mid-Ohioâs tight and technical layout will offer a different kind of test this weekend, one that rewards clean laps and consistency. Douglas will be aiming to stay in podium contention, while Manson will be looking to bounce back and string together a more straightforward weekend.
Shane Van Gisbergen – NASCAR Cup Series & Xfinity Series

- Where? Chicago Street Course, Illinois
- NZ Times:
- Xfinity Series Practice: Sunday 2:30 AM
- Xfinity Series Qualifying: Sunday 3:30 AM

Shane van Gisbergen is back on the streets of Chicago this weekend, ready to tackle both the NASCAR Xfinity and Cup Series races at the same venue where he made history in 2023.
In 2023, the Kiwi stunned the motorsport world by winning his first-ever NASCAR Cup race on debut in the inaugural Chicago Street Race, the first driver to do so in over 60 years.
He returned to Chicago in 2024, claiming victory in the Xfinity Series, but his Cup Series race ended prematurely after being taken out in wet and chaotic conditions by Chase Briscoe.
Now, SVG is back for more. Heâll line up for JR Motorsports in Xfinity and Trackhouse Racing in the Cup Series, fresh off a gritty drive in Atlanta where he charged from 35th to inside the top 10 before being taken out and ultimately finished 24th.
This weekendâs weather could play a key role again. The Xfinity race is forecast to be dry, but heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected for Sundayâs Cup race. That could work in SVGâs favour as heâs a master in the wet and looks to recapture the street course magic that made him a NASCAR star overnight.

Zeal Jones and Bayden Thomson head to Round 5 of the 2025 Morizo Challenge Cup, the first gravel event of the season, taking place in Niseko, Hokkaido, Japan.
Fresh from a strong third-place finish at Round 4âs Montre Rally, where they took three stage wins and retained second in the championship, the Kiwi duo are confident heading into a tough weekend with Cusco Racing.
The event features over 100km of special stages, including a new forest road time attack in Kyogoku Town and a spectator-friendly super special stage. The longest stage, Sunflower (16.24km), on the final day will be key to the outcome.
“Good day being back on the gravel. It’s been awhile. A bit of a smile on my face going side ways for once. Some really good knowledge learnt today for what we will be coming across this weekend.” said Jones after his test day in Sapporo.

Fresh off a landmark victory at the Forest Rally, Hayden Paddon and John Kennard return to Australian Rally Championship (ARC) action this weekend for Round 3, Rally Queensland in Gympie.
Their last ARC outing saw the Kiwi duo deliver a commanding performance in Western Australia, claiming their first-ever ARC round win and the first for a New Zealand crew in 23 years. Paddon sealed the deal with a gritty Power Stage victory, edging out arch-rivals Harry Bates and Coral Taylor by just five seconds.
ARC Forest Rally Recap HERE
Itâs also Paddonâs third rally in as many weekends. Two weeks ago, he was in Ireland for the iconic Donegal International Rally with Irish co-driver Dave Moynihan, where an unfortunate roll ended their rally early. He bounced back last weekend with a strong second-place finish at Rally Ypres in Belgium, a European Rally Championship round, alongside Kiwi co-driver Jared Hudson.
Back with Kennard in the co-driver seat, Paddon will be looking to keep his ARC title hopes alive on the fast Queensland gravel, which features a mix of technical forest roads and flat-out blasts through the trees. Heâll face a tight battle once again with the Bates brothers, Swedenâs Tom Kristensson, and a growing field of local contenders.
Bella Haggarty is also back behind the wheel alongside Scottish co-driver Stewart Reid, following an eventful outing at the Forest Rally that was plagued by technical gremlins and time loss across multiple stages, ultimately finishing 23rd. The duo will be eager to bounce back with a result that better reflects their true potential.
Zack Scoular – EuroCup-3 Championship

Kiwi rookie Zack Scoular returns to the track this weekend for Round 4 of the Eurocup-3 Championship, tackling the iconic Autodromo Nazionale di Monza in Italy. He heads into the round with growing confidence after making solid progress during his debut campaign at Circuit Paul Ricard.
The Tony Quinn Foundation-backed driver scored his best result of the season last time out in France, climbing from 25th to 15th in Race 1 and showing his sharpest racecraft yet through all three races. Across the weekend, Scoular made clean starts, dodged chaos, and executed multiple on-track passes, a promising sign as he continues to get comfortable in his debut European campaign.
Now sitting 29th in the championship, Scoular is still chasing his first points finish, but recent gains in qualifying and consistent race pace suggest that milestone could be just around the corner.
Monzaâs high-speed layout will pose a new challenge, with its long straights and heavy braking zones rewarding drivers who can stay composed under pressure. For Scoular, itâs another valuable opportunity to develop and continue climbing up the order.
Eurocup-3 Paul Ricard Recap HERE
With another two races on the card this weekend, heâll be aiming to turn that momentum into results, and potentially crack into the points for the first time in Eurocup-3.

Fresh off a strong weekend in Sepang, Gilchrist, racing under Team Porsche New Zealand, is full of momentum heading into one of the most challenging and spectacular stops on the calendar. Set on the roads of a coastal Thai town and drawing crowds of over 300,000, Bangsaenâs bumpy surface, tight walls, and fast corners demand razor-sharp precision, and reward bravery.
Gilchrist, returned from emergency appendix surgery in style, finishing inside the top six in all three Sepang races, a sign that heâs back to full strength ahead of this weekend’s street circuit event.

Chris van der Drift is back in action this weekend at the 2025 Bangsaen Grand Prix, teaming up with Gregory Bennett in the AF Racing Ferrari 296 GT3 for Round 2 of the Thailand Super Series (TSS) Supercar GT3 Championship.
One of Southeast Asiaâs biggest motorsport events, the Bangsaen Grand Prix turns a quiet Thai beach town into a fast, unforgiving street circuit lined with concrete walls, bumpy braking zones and a festival-like atmosphere.
Backed by FIA Grade 3 status and regularly drawing crowds of over 300,000, itâs a highlight of the regional racing calendar.
Van der Drift, a three-time Porsche Carrera Cup champion, returns to the cockpit after competing in GT World Challenge Asia at Mandalika back in May.
It was a weekend of highs and lows for the Kiwi; a charging drive in Race 1 saw him and co-driver Adrian DâSilva climb from 34th to finish 16th overall and 9th in Pro-Am. But their momentum was cut short the following day, with Van der Drift forced to retire on the opening lap due to suspected damage.

GT World Challenge Round 4 Recap HERE
Now switching from Porsche to Ferrari, heâll be looking to bounce back in a new environment. The AF Racing-run Ferrari 296 GT3 is one of the strongest packages on the TSS grid, and with Van der Driftâs experience on tight street circuits, the pairing has the potential to be competitive.
With the season heating up and the Bangsaen walls never far away, consistency and composure will be key.

The international quartet brings a well-balanced mix of bronze, silver, and gold-rated talent, and shapes up as one of the dark horses in a stacked 40-car field.
After showing promise in the Asian Le Mans Series earlier this year, the Prime Speed Sport outfit will be looking to carry that momentum into this high-speed, day-to-night test at the fast and technical Circuit Paul Ricard, where strategy, stamina, and precision will be key to staying in the fight.
Also flying the flag is François BĂ©ziac in the #72 Juta Racing Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo I. Competing in the Am class, BĂ©ziacâs entry with co-drivers Tom Jackson (Semi-Pro) and Ameerh Naran (Am) is part of a two-car campaign by the experienced Lithuanian outfit, with both Juta cars sitting well in the GT3 championship standings heading into the penultimate round.
With tight battles expected at the front of the field and pit strategy likely to prove decisive, both the #42 Lamborghini and #72 Audi have the potential to shake up the leaderboard in a key moment of the 2025 24H Series season.

Shane van Gisbergen and Scott McLaughlin are set to jump back into the action at Charlotte Motor Speedway mid-next week, lining up for Round 7 of the Cook Out Summer Shootout in the Pro division of the US Legend Car Series.
The Kiwi pair will also be completing Round 6, which was postponed mid-event last week due to lightning and heavy rain, before turning their attention to the full Round 7 program under the lights.
Their previous outing in Round 5 delivered a thrilling photo finish, with Van Gisbergen edging McLaughlin by just 0.010s in a final-lap drag race to claim eighth. Both drivers impressed in a chaotic feature race that included a gnarly crash on the restart and even caught out NASCARâs Bubba Wallace.
US Legends Round 5 and 6 Recap HERE
Van Gisbergen has slotted comfortably into the oval rhythm, sitting ninth in the championship despite only racing in the series for fun. McLaughlin, whoâs balancing the series with a busy IndyCar schedule, is 18th and continuing to gain ground and rub wheels with his mate SVG.
