Motorsport Diary: Kiwis competing abroad this weekend

Supercars, Super Formula, the European Rally Championship, British F4, Formula Regional Americas, Porsche Sprint Challenge Australia and GT4 America. It’s yet another monster weekend for Kiwi motorsport!

Liam Lawson is in action in Japan, with Shane van Gisbergen, Matt Payne, Andre Heimgartner, Ronan Murphy, Zac Stichbury and Marco Giltrap all competing in Tasmania. Rianna O’Meara-Hunt returns to America, as does Callum Hedge, while Louis Sharp races at Snetterton and Hayden Paddon competes in Rally Poland.

There’s also the 24 Hours of Nurburgring which features a strong Kiwi attack across multiple classes!

Liam Lawson: Super Formula

  • Where? Autopolis, Japan

Liam Lawson enters this round of Super Formula sitting third in the standings but only seven points off the leader, teammate Tomoki Nojiri.

The Kiwi has impressed thus far in Japan, winning on debut and backing that up with a fifth and a fourth.

Shane van Gisbergen, Andre Heimgartner & Matt Payne: Supercars Tasmania SuperSprint

  • Where? Symmons Plains, Tasmania
  • NZ Times:

    • Race 10: Saturday 5.50 pm
    • Race 11 Qualifying: Sunday 11.50 am
    • Race 12 Qualifying: Sunday 12.15 am

Supercars return for three 42-lap races at Symmons Plains this weekend with defending champion Shane van Gisbergen leading the Kiwi sitting third in the standings.

Andre Heimgartner is currently in eighth, while Matt Payne is the best rookie in the standings in 12th.

Hayden Paddon: European Rally Championship- Rally Poland

  • Where? Poland

Hayden Paddon and John Kennard will partner up once again in BRC Racing Team’s Hyundai i20 N Rally2 for the third round of the European Rally Championship.

The Kiwi duo lead the ERC standings heading into the massive 182.06 km predominantly gravel rally.

Louis Sharp: British Formula 4

Louis Sharp enters Round 3 of the British Formula 4 season with a 13-point lead over closest rival James Higgins.

The young Kiwi has impressed early this season, taking two race wins in the opening round and two fourth-place results in Round 2.

Marco Giltrap, Ronan Murphy & Zac Stichbury: Porsche Sprint Challenge Australia

  • Where? Symmons Plains, Tasmania
  • NZ Times:
    • Qualifying: Friday 4.50 pm
    • Race 1: Saturday 1.35 pm
    • Race 2: Saturday 4.35 pm
    • Race 3: Sunday 1.45 pm

Three talented young Kiwis line up on the grid for three Porsche Sprint Challenge Australia races this weekend, with Marco Giltrap leading the championship having won two races and finished second in the other.

Ronan Murphy is fourth in the championship, one spot ahead of Zac Stichbury who will be flying with the slick Peanut Slab livery at Symmons Plains.

The class is racing in support of Supercars.

Rianna O’Meara-Hunt: GT4 America

  • Where? Circuit of the Americas, Texas
  • NZ Times:
    • Qualifying: Sunday 3.20 am
    • Race 1: Sunday 10.00 am
    • Race 2: Monday 3.50 am

Rianna O’Meara-Hunt returns to the GT4 America Championship for the Heart of Racing Team, where she shares the drive of an Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT4 with Hannah Grisham.

The duo compete in the Am-Am class of the series and have shown consistent improvement in trying conditions over a short timeframe, making them ones worth watching this weekend.

Callum Hedge: Formula Regional Americas

  • Where? Road America
  • NZ Times:
    • Qualifying: Sunday 3.10 am
    • Race 1: Sunday 8.20 am
    • Race 2: Monday 4.20 am
    • Race 3: Monday 7.15 am

Callum Hedge returns to the United States for the second round of Formula Regional Americas at Road America.

The Kiwi currently sits second in the standings and comes into the round having won the final race of the season-opener at NOLA.

Earl Bamber, Tony Richards, Peter Scharmach, Grant Dalton, Grant Woolford & Wayne Moore: Nurburgring 24 Hours

  • Where? Nurburgring, Germany
  • NZ Times:
    • Race: Sunday 2.00 am- Monday 2.00 am

A strong Kiwi contingent in the Nurburgring 24 Hours features across multiple classes. Earl Bamber spearheads the New Zealand attack, competing in the GT3 class.

Bamber is competing for Frikadelli Racing Team, sharing the drive of a Ferrari 296 GT3 with Nicky Catsburg, Felipe Fernandez Laser and David Pittard.

Tony Richards is competing in GT4 for FK Performance Motorsport, partnering Ranko Mijatovic, Hakan Sari and Recep Sari in a BMW M4 GT4 Gen II.

Peter Scharmach partners Robin Chrzanowski, Kersten Jodexnis and Dylan Pereira for Clickversicherung Team, driving in the Cup2 Porsche 992 Cup class, driving the #169 Porsche 992 GT3 Cup.

Grant Dalton and Grant Woolford team up with James Breakell and Harley Haughton for an Am entry in the Cup3 Cayman GT4 Trophy. The quad are sharing a Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport.

Wayne Moore rounds out the Kiwis in action at Nurburgring, competing in the VT2 class with the VTH entry from Giti Tire Motorsport By WS Racing. The team of Moore, Lukas Drost, Matthias Moller and Fabian Pirrone are sharing a BMW 330i for the race.
