Brodie Kostecki has won the opening race of the Supercars Sandown 500, securing his place in the Adelaide Grand Final, while Kiwi Matt Payne finished second to retain his lead in the Finals standings.

Fellow Kiwi Andre Heimgartner finished eighth, while Ryan Wood endured a difficult race to finish 17th.
Payne started the 79-lap race from pole position after topping Saturday’s Top 10 Shootout, with Cam Waters alongside him on the front row. Heimgartner qualified ninth, while Wood lined up 12th.
Despite wet weather earlier in the day, conditions had cleared by the time racing got underway, with sunshine and a dry track greeting the field.
Payne made a strong start, getting the jump on Waters to lead through the opening corners. Will Brown and Broc Feeney moved into third and fourth, while Kostecki dropped two places to fifth.
Heimgartner gained a position on the opening lap to move into eighth, while Wood slipped to 14th.
However, Heimgartner lost ground on Lap 5 after being pushed wide at Turn 2 and running across the grass at Turn 3. He dropped to 12th before Wood passed him on the following lap.
Out front, Payne had built a 3.2-second advantage by Lap 10, with Brown moving into second ahead of Waters, Kostecki and Feeney.
His lead was wiped out three laps later when Aaron Cameron’s car caught fire, bringing out the Safety Car and triggering a rush into pit lane.
Payne lost two positions during the stops, emerging behind Brown and Kostecki in third. However, the Kiwi had taken on more fuel than the two drivers ahead, potentially giving him an advantage later in the race.
Heimgartner moved up to ninth during the pit stop sequence, while Wood dropped to 17th. Racing resumed on Lap 20, with Brown holding off Kostecki, Payne and Waters in a close battle for the lead.
The order changed dramatically on Lap 36 when Kostecki made a move on Brown for the lead. Brown made contact with the left rear of Kostecki’s car but ended up spinning himself, dropping to 22nd.
Kostecki took over the lead ahead of Payne, Waters, Feeney and Anton De Pasquale, while Heimgartner had recovered to eighth.
Just three laps later, another Safety Car was called after Jackson Walls crashed into the barriers and became stranded in the gravel at Turn 9. The field headed into pit lane again, with Payne losing another two positions as Waters emerged ahead of Kostecki and the Kiwi.
When racing resumed on Lap 42, Kostecki quickly took the lead back from Waters.
Behind them, Payne and Feeney made contact while battling for position, allowing Chaz Mostert to pass both drivers and move into third. Payne dropped to fifth, behind Feeney.
Brown’s difficult race continued when he received a 15-second time penalty for an incident involving Cameron Hill.
With 27 laps remaining, Kostecki led Waters, Feeney, Payne and Mostert, while Heimgartner was running tenth. Payne recovered to second during the closing stages, but Kostecki had already established a comfortable lead.
With five laps remaining, Kostecki held a 3.8-second advantage over Payne, with Waters a further 6.8 seconds behind. Kostecki eventually crossed the line 5.2 seconds clear of Payne, securing victory and confirming his place in the Adelaide Grand Final.
Waters completed the podium ahead of Mostert, James Golding, De Pasquale and Cooper Murray. Heimgartner recovered from his early setback to finish eighth, with Macauley Jones and Zach Bates rounding out the top ten.
Wood had a tougher afternoon, struggling to recover from his early loss of positions and receiving a time penalty for an earlier incident. He eventually finished 17th. Despite missing out on victory, Payne remains at the top of the Finals standings heading into Sunday’s final race at Sandown.
Kostecki moves into second ahead of Mostert and Waters, while Feeney has dropped into the elimination zone in fifth, alongside De Pasquale and Brown.
In the overall championship standings, Payne leads with 4,288 points, just 42 ahead of Kostecki. Mostert sits third, 93 points behind the Kiwi, while Feeney and Waters are fourth and fifth, separated by just one point.
With only one race remaining before the Adelaide Grand Final, the battle for the remaining Finals positions is set to be decided on Sunday.
Qualifying for Race 34 gets underway on Sunday at 11:20am local time (1:20pm NZT), followed by the Top 10 Shootout.
The final race of the weekend begins at 3:30pm local time (5:30pm NZT), where the remaining Adelaide Grand Final spots will be decided.
