KIWIS RACING ABROAD | 29 AUGUST – 1 SEPTEMBER WEEKEND PREVIEW 🏁
From Monza’s high-speed theatre to Gateway’s technical oval, Spa’s forest sweeps, Sepang’s searing heat, and the gravel stages of Hokkaido, Kiwi racers are set for one of the most action-packed weekends of the year across nearly every corner of global motorsport.
In Italy, Formula 1 roars into its iconic Temple of Speed at Monza. Liam Lawson resumes his maiden campaign with Racing Bulls, eager to make an impression at one of the fastest circuits on the calendar.
He’s joined on the Monza bill by Louis Sharp in Formula 3, with the young Rodin Motorsport driver looking to close out his debut season on a strong note.
Also in Europe, Zack Scoular continues his Eurocup-3 campaign with Palou Motorsport at the legendary Spa-Francorchamps, home of the Ardennes forest’s sweeping corners and unpredictable weather.
Across the Atlantic, Shane van Gisbergen continues his maiden NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs charge at World Wide Technology Raceway in Illinois. The unique 1.25-mile oval demands precision through its contrasting corners and heavy braking zones. With playoff pressure mounting, SVG faces a crucial test as he looks to rebound from a difficult Darlington opener and keep his championship hopes alive.
Down under, The Bend Motorsport Park hosts a Kiwi-heavy GT Festival. In GT World Challenge Australia, Ryan Wood, Jaxon Evans and Steve Brooks represent the New Zealand contingent in the endurance double-header, while Tony Quinn and Chris White Jr chase class honours in GT4 Australia.
Rising stars Tom Bewley and Hunter Robb also return to action in the Porsche Sprint Challenge, both with their eyes on podium silverware.
Meanwhile in Sydney, the World Time Attack Challenge takes centre stage at Sydney Motorsport Park. David Newton leads the Kiwi effort in the GCG Turbochargers Open Class in his NTR Ford Focus RS, while the Garrett International Drifting Cup adds more New Zealand flair with Mad Mike Whiddett in his Mazda RX3 808 Estate Wagon, Jaron Olivecrona in a V12-powered Lexus, Michael Thorley in a 1990 Nissan 180SX, and Nick Owen in a 1996 Nissan Silvia S14.5.
Elsewhere in Asia, Brendon Leitch resumes his Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia campaign at Sepang, where extreme humidity and tyre management will play a key role.
Kiwi rally fans will also be keeping an eye on Hokkaido, Japan, where Zeal Jones and Bayden Thomson contest Round 6 of the Morizo Challenge Cup, navigating challenging gravel stages in pursuit of strong results.
Two Kiwi world championship campaigns also continue this weekend. In Moto3, Cormac Buchanan races at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya, building on his rookie year at the sport’s sharp end.
In France, Avalon Lewis represents Carl Cox Motorsport in the WorldWCR round at Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours.
Meanwhile, endurance stars fly the flag in Texas as the FIA World Endurance Championship hits Circuit of the Americas. Earl Bamber lines up for Cadillac with Sébastien Bourdais and Jenson Button, while Brendon Hartley continues his championship fight with Toyota alongside Sébastien Buemi and Ryō Hirakawa.
Rounding out the slate, Cole Davies begins his SuperMotocross World Championship Playoff campaign in Concord, North Carolina, competing in the 250 class with Yamaha Star Racing.
From single-seaters to stock cars, rally stages to GT endurance, it’s another blockbuster weekend for Kiwi motorsport fans.

Liam Lawson endured a frustrating Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort last weekend, the Kiwi’s hopes of points unravelling after contact with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz.
The 23-year-old showed promising pace early in the weekend, qualifying eighth at the circuit where he made his Formula 1 debut back in 2023. He settled into the midfield battle at the start, dicing with Sainz and Charles Leclerc as Racing Bulls’ strong form continued.
Lawson’s race turned on lap 22 during the first safety car period. Jostling for position into Turn 1, he and Sainz tangled, with the contact sending Lawson into the pits, missing a left-rear tyre.
He rejoined a lap down on fresh softs, while Sainz required a new front wing and was later handed a 10-second penalty for causing the incident.
Despite the setback, Lawson produced a gritty recovery drive to finish 12th, salvaging what he could from a bruising weekend. It was little consolation after showing top-10 speed throughout practice and qualifying, but it underlined his determination to fight back under challenging circumstances.
As Formula 1 now heads to Monza for the Italian Grand Prix, Lawson is eager to put Zandvoort behind him and reignite his momentum at the sport’s fastest circuit. The high-speed nature of Monza offers a very different challenge, and with the second half of the season ramping up, the Kiwi will be determined to reassert himself in the points battle.
Louis Sharp | Formula 3

- Where? Autodromo Nazionale Monza, Italy
- NZ Times:
- Practice: Friday 7:35 PM

After making history in Budapest with one of the most remarkable recovery drives seen in FIA Formula 3, Louis Sharp returns to action this weekend at Monza for the season finale.
The Kiwi teenager stunned the paddock in Hungary by gaining a record 29 positions across the Sprint and Feature races, climbing from 28th on the grid to finish 16th and 11th respectively.
At a circuit renowned for its lack of overtaking opportunities, Sharp’s charge through the field showcased his racecraft and determination, despite the ongoing straight-line speed struggles that have hampered his campaign.
“It seems to be the same old issues, and we’re struggling to understand what they are,” Sharp admitted after qualifying in Budapest. “Every weekend it seems to be getting worse, and we’re getting slower and slower.”
But when the lights went out, he showed his true ability. From bold opening-lap moves to decisive passes in the wet, Sharp thrived in chaotic conditions to leave Hungary with momentum and confidence heading into the break.
Now, Formula 3 returns for its curtain call at the Temple of Speed. Monza’s long straights and slipstream battles promise a completely different test to Budapest, with opportunities to attack from the very first lap.
For Sharp, it’s a chance to finish his rookie F3 season on a high note, proving once again that his race-day instincts can turn any setback into a statement drive.
Zack Scoular | Eurocup-3

- Where? Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium
- NZ Times:

After a mixed outing at Assen, Kiwi teenager Zack Scoular is preparing for one of the most iconic venues on the Eurocup-3 calendar as the series heads to Belgium’s Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps this weekend for Round 6 of the 2025 season.
Round 5 at TT Circuit Assen marked another valuable learning weekend for the 17-year-old Tony Quinn Foundation Ambassador, who showed flashes of progress but left with results that didn’t fully reflect his performance.
Despite clean starts and some strong racecraft, track limits penalties in both races ultimately cost Scoular potential top-20 finishes.
Now attention turns to Spa, a 7.004km circuit steeped in history and known for its high-speed sections and technical challenges. From the flat-out run through Eau Rouge and Raidillon to the long straights and fast sweeps of Blanchimont, it’s a demanding test for both driver and car.
Like many of his Eurocup-3 rivals, Scoular will be experiencing Spa in race conditions for the first time. With only the top 10 finishers earning championship points, the Kiwi will be aiming to build on the lessons learned earlier in the season as he continues his push towards breaking into the points.
With three rounds still remaining in 2025, Spa offers Scoular and Palou Motorsport another opportunity to convert progress into results against one of the toughest junior single-seater fields in Europe.
Shane Van Gisbergen | NASCAR Cup Series

- Where? World Wide Technology Raceway, Illinois
- NZ Times:
- Practice: Sunday 8:30 AM
- Qualifying: Sunday 9:40 AM
- Race: Monday 7:00 AM

Shane van Gisbergen’s NASCAR Cup Series Playoff debut at Darlington quickly turned into a night to forget, with the Kiwi finishing a frustrating 32nd after battling an ill-handling car and a failed strategy gamble.
Starting 20th, van Gisbergen initially climbed into the top 15 before his No. 88 Trackhouse Chevrolet developed severe balance issues.
Complaining that the car was “way too tight” and unwilling to turn off Turn 2, the Kiwi slipped backwards as his crew struggled to find a solution. A slow pit stop and a string of unlucky cautions only compounded his misery.
The team rolled the dice late with a one-stop strategy, and van Gisbergen even cycled briefly into the lead on lap 280. But the gamble unravelled when a caution fell at the worst possible time, leaving him two laps down and out of contention.
He eventually crossed the line 32nd, tumbling from 6th to 12th in the playoff standings, just three points above the cut line.
Now, attention shifts to World Wide Technology Raceway in Illinois, the second race of the Round of 16. The tricky 1.25-mile oval is known for its unique egg-shaped corners and heavy braking zones, offering little margin for error.
For van Gisbergen, it’s a crucial opportunity to rebound and strengthen his playoff bid, with his championship hopes hanging in the balance.

After an emotional and action-packed weekend at Sandown, Kiwi GT drivers Steve Brooks, Ryan Wood, and Jaxon Evans are back in action this weekend at The Bend Motorsport Park in South Australia for Rounds 9 and 10 of the 2025 GT World Challenge Australia.
Sandown was a weekend of highs and heartbreak, with Evans and teammate Elliott Schutte delivering an emotional victory in Race 1 while Brooks and Wood showcased their speed and consistency throughout the double-header.
The Kiwi trio combined for multiple podium appearances, highlighting their dominance and determination in both the Pro and Pro-Am categories.
The Bend promises a different challenge. Known for its sweeping corners, high-speed straights, and technical infield sections, the South Australian circuit will test both car setup and driver precision over the endurance-style double-header.
For Evans, it’s a chance to continue building championship momentum following his triple-Kiwi podium weekend at Sandown. Brooks and Wood will be aiming to convert strong pace into consistent results, keeping them firmly in contention as the championship heads toward its season finale at Hampton Downs.

After a sensational debut in GT4 Australia at Queensland Raceway, Chris White Jr returns to the series this weekend alongside Tony Quinn for Rounds 9 and 10 at The Bend Motorsport Park in South Australia as part of Shannon’s Speed Series GT Festival.
White Jr made an immediate impact in June, claiming a podium in the Silver-AM class and finishing fourth overall aboard the Game Over Toyota GR Supra GT4 Evo. Partnered with Quinn, the young Kiwi impressed across changeable conditions, combining pace, composure, and clever strategy to make a strong debut.
The opportunity came after White Jr was crowned Rookie of the Year in the 2024–25 Toyota GR86 Championship, where he earned the chance to compete alongside the series ambassador, Quinn. With a test at Taupo helping him adapt to the powerful GT4 machinery, White Jr quickly showed he belonged in the top ranks.
The Bend presents a new challenge. The South Australian circuit’s mix of high-speed straights, technical corners, and undulating elevation changes will test both drivers’ skill and their Toyota Supra setup.
For Quinn, it’s an opportunity to mentor White Jr once more, while also leveraging his own extensive experience to stay competitive. For White Jr, it’s a chance to build on his debut success, convert pace into podiums, and continue his rise as one of New Zealand’s brightest GT racing talents.

Kiwi Porsche Sprint Challenge contenders Tom Bewley and Hunter Robb head to The Bend Motorsport Park in South Australia this weekend for Round 5 of the 2025 championship, part of the GT Festival.
Both drivers are eager to bounce back after a dramatic and challenging weekend at Reid Park in Townsville. Bewley showed raw pace and racecraft throughout, claiming a podium in Race 1, but was cruelly taken out of Race 3 by a heavy collision while challenging for the lead.
Robb, meanwhile, delivered consistent performances, climbing through the field to finish inside the top ten despite the chaos.
For Bewley, the focus will be on converting speed into clean, trouble-free results and regaining momentum in the championship. Robb aims to continue his impressive form, making up ground in the standings and showing that his Townsville performances were no fluke.

Kiwi Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia driver Brendon Leitch heads to Malaysia this weekend for the penultimate round of the 2025 championship at the Sepang International Circuit, representing Leipert Motorsport in the Pro-AM class alongside co-driver Jiajun Song.
The team arrives eager to build on a rollercoaster Round 4 at Inje Speedium in July. Leitch and Song endured a challenging Race 1, finishing 15th overall and sixth in class, before bouncing back in Race 2 to claim a class podium, sixth overall and second in Pro-AM.
That mixed weekend highlighted the duo’s resilience, speed, and ability to adapt under pressure, traits they’ll be leaning on at Sepang.
The Sepang circuit, with its high-speed straights, heavy braking zones, and scorching tropical conditions, is a demanding test of both driver skill and car setup.
Leitch will be looking to maintain a consistent pace and secure strong finishes across the weekend’s two races, with a class victory and solid overall results firmly in his sights.
With the championship heading into its final two rounds, every point matters, and the Kiwi driver is determined to make Sepang another weekend to remember.

In the Time Attack competition, David Newton returns at the wheel of the NTR Newton Team Racing Ford Focus RS, entered in the highly competitive GCG Turbochargers Open Class.
Newton will look to push the limits against some of the fastest time attack machinery in the world, with outright pace and precision critical around the 4.5km circuit.
Alongside the time trial action, the Garrett International Drifting Cup brings a strong New Zealand flavour to the grid. Mad Mike Whiddett headlines the Kiwi contingent in his wild Mazda RX3 808 Estate Wagon, while Jaron Olivecrona brings his unique V12-powered Lexus to the mix.
They’re joined by Michael Thorley in a 1990 Nissan 180SX and Nick Owen in a 1996 Nissan Silvia S14.5, each ready to put on a show in front of a global drifting audience.
The World Time Attack Challenge is one of the biggest annual motorsport events in Australia, drawing drivers, tuners, and fans from around the globe.

Kiwi rally duo Zeal Jones and Bayden Thomson are back in action this weekend as the Morizo Challenge Cup heads to Rally Hokkaido in Japan for Round 5 of the 2025 season.
After a challenging outing at Rally Kamui in August, the team is eager to reset and push for their first outright win of the campaign.
Jones and Thomson were showing top-three pace at Kamui before contact with a hidden concrete drain forced a retirement, ending what had been a promising challenge for victory.
Despite the setback, the Kiwi crew took plenty of positives away, including improved setup understanding and a renewed confidence in adapting to Japan’s varied surface conditions.
Currently second in the championship standings, Jones and Thomson trail leaders Otake Nao and Hashimoto Misaki by 73 points. With three rounds remaining, including Hokkaido, the Kiwi pair remain in striking distance of the title, provided they can combine speed, precision, and reliability over the coming events.
Rally Hokkaido will once again test the duo on unfamiliar surfaces, requiring a careful balance of aggression and control. With the Toyota GR Yaris proving to be a competitive package in the Cusco team, Jones and Thomson are aiming for a flawless weekend to maximise points and, ideally, secure that elusive first victory.

After a challenging but promising outing at Hungary’s Balaton Park Circuit, Buchanan and his DENSSI-BOE Motorsport team are focused on turning strong pace into points at their European home round.
At Balaton Park, Buchanan steadily improved through the weekend, moving from 22nd and 21st in Free Practice to 19th on the grid. Unfortunately, a crash on Lap 13 ended his race early, but he had shown he could match the pace of riders ahead and make up positions on the track.
Barcelona-Catalunya will test him with a mix of long straights and technical corners, where consistency and careful tyre management are key. The Kiwi will be looking for a clean race and a chance to convert his speed into a solid points finish.
With the European rounds in full swing, this weekend is an important opportunity for Buchanan to build on his recent progress and make a mark in the championship.

The Magny-Cours layout will challenge drivers with a mix of flowing high-speed sections and tight technical corners, making precision and consistency essential.
Lewis will be aiming to build on her recent momentum and score valuable points as the championship heads into its final round in Spain at Circuito de Jerez on October 17–19.
This weekend is a key opportunity for the Kiwi driver to improve her championship position and continue her push toward a strong finish in her second World WCR season.

Bamber returns to the #38 Cadillac Hertz Team Jota entry alongside Sébastien Bourdais and Jenson Button, carrying momentum from a strong result in São Paulo, where the trio finished second overall and on the podium.
Hartley, meanwhile, heads back into the #8 Toyota Gazoo Racing GR010 HYBRID with Ryō Hirakawa and Sébastien Buemi, looking to bounce back after a difficult weekend at Interlagos that saw the team finish 15th.
COTA presents a fresh challenge with its combination of fast straights, technical corners, and elevation changes. For Bamber, it’s a chance to build on Cadillac’s consistent performance, while Hartley and Toyota will be focused on extracting pace and clawing back into contention in the championship.

Kiwi rider Cole Davies begins his 2025 SuperMotocross Playoff campaign this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, lining up for Round 1 after an injury-hit Pro Motocross season.
Davies impressed earlier in the year with a third-place finish in the 250SX West Supercross Championship behind Haiden Deegan and Julien Beaumer, but his momentum was halted when he broke his arm and nose in a crash at the Supercross finale.
The setback forced him to miss most of the outdoor Pro Motocross season, only returning for the final two rounds.
As a result, Davies enters the Playoffs 17th in the standings, but with a clean bill of health and valuable track time back under his belt, he’ll be aiming to climb quickly through the order.
