Matt Payne has strengthened his Supercars championship campaign with a commanding victory in Saturday’s race at the Townsville 500, while fellow Kiwis Ryan Wood and Andre Heimgartner endured vastly different afternoons.

After qualifying on the front row, Payne settled into second place behind Brodie Kostecki during the opening stint before the race swung in his favour during the first round of pit stops.
A slow stop for Kostecki handed the Grove Racing driver the lead, and once out front, Payne was untouchable, controlling the remainder of the race to secure his first victory since Christchurch in April.
The win also delivers a significant boost in the championship standings, with Payne extending his advantage over his nearest rival, Broc Feeney, to 61 points.
While Payne enjoyed one of his most convincing victories of the season, it was a frustrating race for Ryan Wood.
Wood was in the thick of the action all afternoon after starting from the second row and briefly looked capable of fighting for a podium. He was involved in several fierce battles throughout the race, including an aggressive exchange with Kostecki before finding himself in a tense multi-car fight with Kai Allen, Will Brown, Broc Feeney and Chaz Mostert.
The race unravelled when Allen attempted to move into Turn 11, sliding alongside Wood’s Mustang and making heavy contact with the front-right wheel. The impact caused major steering damage, forcing the Walkinshaw TWG Racing driver back to the garage for lengthy repairs.
Clearly frustrated, Wood vented his anger over team radio before eventually returning to the track several laps later. Although he made it to the finish, he was classified last after losing six laps, and his hopes of climbing further inside the Finals positions took a significant hit.
Andre Heimgartner quietly produced one of the stronger recovery drives of the day. After qualifying 22nd, the PremiAir Racing driver steadily worked his way up to finish 16th, gaining six positions over the 70-lap race.
Behind Payne, Anton De Pasquale delivered one of the standout performances of the afternoon. Starting outside the top 10, an alternative pit strategy and strong pace on fresh tyres saw him charge through the field to claim second place.
Kostecki recovered from his costly pit stop delay to complete the podium in third, while Cam Waters and Thomas Randle rounded out the top five after another competitive showing for Tickford Racing.
Will Brown climbed from 12th on the grid to finish sixth after another measured recovery drive, ahead of Chaz Mostert. Despite starting deep in the field, championship contender Broc Feeney salvaged valuable points by charging from 18th to eighth, with Jack Le Brocq and David Reynolds following.
With another dominant display, Payne leaves Saturday as the clear championship leader and carrying plenty of momentum into Sunday’s final Townsville race, where he will be looking to complete a dream weekend and further cement his status as the driver to beat in the 2026 title fight.
