Two-for-two for Payne as he clinches double pole

Matthew Payne has made it a double pole day in Perth as he took a comfortable pole position for Race 24, ahead of Andre Heimgartner in sixth, and Ryan Wood in eleventh.

At the start of the session, Payne and Wood both started to show good pace as Payne shot to the top, with Wood in third. After the first runs, Heimgartner sat eleventh, just on the verge of progressing through to the top 10 qualifying session.

After a poor Race 23 qualifying, Chaz Mostert and Broc Feeney were able to improve to provisionally sit in the top 10.

In a move of confidence, Penrite Racing chose not to send Payne and Allen out for a second run in the first session, believing they would be better to risk it to save tyres then go out and burn a set up.

Feeney quickly shot to provisional pole, and was then pipped by Thomas Randle. Waters then popped into the ten, and as Wood was not able to improve, left the Kiwi out of the top 10 session.

Wood’s elimination meant that it would only be two Kiwis in the final session for Race 24.

At the start of the final session, most cars headed out early to set a banker lap. Rylan Grey temporarily sat at the top, but was pipped by Feeney. Heimgartner sat in fifth with a few minutes to go, and Payne only headed out towards the end of the session.

On the final runs, Heimgartner moved into third as Payne started to set purple sectors. Feeney went back to the lead ahead of Randle, but was pipped by Payne who put in a great lap, two tenths ahead of the field.

No other drivers managed to set faster laps, meaning Payne takes back-to-back poles for Race 23 and 24, ahead of Heimgartner in sixth, and Wood in eleventh.
