Kiwis Speedy in Sydney Supports

Yesterday marked not only the beginning of the 2025 Supercars season at Sydney Motorsport Park but also the start of the Super2 and Porsche Carrera Cup Australia seasons.

This year will see Kiwi Ayrton Hodson compete in Super2 with Anderson Motorsport, while fellow Kiwis Marco Giltrap and Clay Osborne will race in Porsche Carrera Cup Australia with Team Porsche New Zealand/EBM and McElrea Racing respectively.

The opening practice sessions for both series saw strong performances from the Kiwi drivers.

In Super2, Ayrton Hodson made an immediate and impressive debut, topping the first practice session with a time of 1:32.5593—achieved on only his second lap—a mark that remained unchallenged throughout the 50-minute session. This was a remarkable result, particularly given it was his first official Super2 session. He then completed just eight laps in the second practice session, a strategic decision by Hodson and his team to conserve tyres for the remainder of the weekend’s racing.

In Porsche Carrera Cup Australia, Marco Giltrap led the opening practice session, posting a 1:30.0872 to beat reigning champion Harri Jones by 0.0434 of a second. Rookie Clay Osborne also performed well, finishing 12th, eight tenths of a second behind Giltrap.

Giltrap continued his strong showing in Practice 2, finishing second, just 0.0721 behind pace setter Dylan O’Keefe. Osborne also impressed, finishing fifth overall with a time of 1:30.0456, only three tenths of a second off the fastest time—an excellent result considering its just his third Porsche Carrera Cup Australia start.

Qualifying and the opening races for both Super2 and Porsche Carrera Cup Australia take place today. With Porsche qualifying kicking off Saturday’s action at 2:35pm NZT.

You’ll be able to catch all of the Sydney Support action live on SkySport 5.
