Maximilian Günther won the non-championship round of the ABB Formula E Race from Home Challenge in Monaco. Kiwi’s Nick Cassidy and Mitch Evans performed well to take fourth and seventh respectively.

After achieving the Julius Baer Pole Position earlier in the event, Günther took the lead heading into turn one, leading from Stoffel Vandoorne, Jean-Eric Vergne, André Lotterer, and Cassidy.

Carnage ensued down the pack as Lucas di Grassi was caught up in the first corner melee.

The race format meant that the last placed driver at the end of each lap after lap 5 would be eliminated.

Lotterer made an opportunistic move on Vergne to take fourth at the second corner hairpin. The act of forcing Vergne wide provided an opportunity for Cassidy to pass the Frenchman for fourth.

Vergne maintained pressure on Cassidy until he spun on the approach to La Rascasse, leaving Cassidy free to chase after Lotterer.

Cassidy attempted a move at turn 2, only for the Kiwi to spin out Lotterer. Cassidy elected not to pass Lotterer and sportingly allowed for the three-time Le Mans winner to continue ahead.

It was a quiet race for Evans meanwhile, and a tough one for Hartley, who was eliminated midway through the race, finishing 16th overall.

Meanwhile, Günther was able to fend off a late charge from Vandoorne to take victory, with Lotterer in third, Cassidy fourth, and Nico Müller fifth. Evans and Hartley finished seventh and 16th respectively.

The first points-paying round of the championship is scheduled for next Sunday 6:30am NZT.
