KIWIS RACING ABROAD | JULY 11-14 WEEKEND PREVIEW 🏁

Another action-packed weekend of motorsport is on the cards, with 24 drivers flying the flag across 13 categories around the world—from electric battles in Berlin to short oval thrills in Iowa and V8 warfare in Townsville.

In the U.S., Shane van Gisbergen returns to road course action at Sonoma Raceway, contesting both the NASCAR Xfinity and Cup Series races. He’ll steer for JR Motorsports in Xfinity and Trackhouse Racing in the Cup Series as he looks to reinforce his street and road racing prowess in Wine Country.

Scott Dixon, Scott McLaughlin, and Marcus Armstrong are gearing up for Round 11 of the IndyCar Series, a doubleheader weekend at Iowa Speedway, the short oval where McLaughlin claimed victory in 2024.

Callum Hedge will also tackle the oval challenge in Indy NXT, gaining more valuable experience on U.S. tracks.

Over in Canada, Hunter McElrea races in Round 8 of the IMSA SportsCar Championship at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, sharing LMP2 duties with American driver Steven Thomas for TDS Racing.

It’s a big weekend in electric racing as Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy head to Berlin’s Tempelhof Airport for a Formula E doubleheader. The Jaguar TCS Racing duo will be aiming for strong results in Rounds 13 and 14 as the season nears its climax.

In Brazil, endurance stars Brendon Hartley and Earl Bamber take on the 6 Hours of São Paulo in the World Endurance Championship. Hartley is paired once more with Ryō Hirakawa in the #8 Toyota Hypercar, while Bamber shares his Cadillac with Sébastien Bourdais and Jenson Button in what promises to be a thrilling fifth round of the WEC season.

On two wheels, Cormac Buchanan tackles the German Grand Prix at the tight and twisty Sachsenring as Moto3 enters Round 11. The young Southlander continues to build on an impressive rookie campaign with BOE Motorsport.

Over in the UK, Avalon Lewis and Billee Fuller are back in action and will suit up for Carl Cox Motorsports in Round 3 of the World WCR Championship at Donington Park, continuing their international motorcycle racing journey.

Back in Australia, Townsville plays host to a bumper program at the Supercars Townsville 500 at Reid Park Street Circuit. Kiwis in the top tier include Matt Payne, Ryan Wood, Andre Heimgartner, Richie Stanaway, and Jaxon Evans.

In the support categories, Ayrton Hodson flies the flag in Super2, Tom Bewley, William Exton, and Hunter Robb line up in the Porsche Sprint Challenge, and Ben Stewart kicks off his Toyota GR Cup Australia campaign with 99 Motorsport.

Shane Van Gisbergen and Scott McLaughlin will again return to Charlotte Motor Speedway mid next week on Wednesday 17th July for Round 8 of the Cook Out Summer Shoot Out Series, competing in the Pro Division of the US Legend Car Series for Joe Ryan Race Cars as Team SSR.

From the bumpy Townsville streets to the sweeping bends of Sonoma and the relentless tempo of SĂŁo Paulo, New Zealanders are once again punching above their weight and chasing glory across the globe.

Check out our detailed weekend preview below for everything you need to know, including session times, how to watch, and who’s racing where. ⬇️

Shane van Gisbergen was simply untouchable in Chicago, pulling off a historic weekend sweep that saw him take victory in both the NASCAR Xfinity and Cup Series races, from pole position in both.

Less than 24 hours after a thrilling Xfinity win with JR Motorsports, the Kiwi street circuit master backed it up with a sensational drive to win the Cup Series race for Trackhouse Racing, navigating chaos, strategy, and late-race cautions to take the chequered flag under yellow.

➡️ Chicago Xfinity Series Recap HERE

SVG became just the second driver in NASCAR history to win both races in a weekend from pole, and with his third Cup Series win, he now holds the record for the most wins by a foreign-born driver in the category.

It also locked him into the 2025 playoffs, with the Kiwi quickly establishing himself as NASCAR’s modern-day road and street course specialist.

➡️ Chicago Cup Series Recap HERE

Now the 36-year-old is aiming to extend that dominance as NASCAR heads to Sonoma Raceway this weekend. He’ll once again run double duty. Xfinity with JR Motorsports and Cup with Trackhouse, and is chasing a third or fourth straight road course win in a row.

With momentum on his side and confidence at an all time high, SVG could be about to write yet another chapter in what’s already becoming a remarkable debut season.

Scott Dixon, Scott McLaughlin & Marcus Armstrong – NTT IndyCar Series

Scott Dixon pulled off a classic Mid-Ohio masterclass last weekend, combining pinpoint fuel saving with ruthless racecraft to snatch his 59th career IndyCar win, and his first of the season, after Alex Palou made a rare mistake with five laps to go.

It was vintage Dixon: cool under pressure, clever with strategy, and clinical when it mattered most. The win also extended two staggering records: 21 consecutive seasons with at least one win and victories in 23 different years.

Meanwhile, Marcus Armstrong was right in the mix, finishing a strong 7th after running inside the top five for much of the race. Scott McLaughlin, on the other hand, had a weekend to forget, finishing 23rd after multiple pit stops and setup struggles left him battling all race long.

➡️ Mid-Ohio Recap HERE

Now the focus shifts to the Iowa Speedway doubleheader, where McLaughlin returns as the 2024 race winner, Dixon has five career podiums, and Armstrong looks to build on last year’s debut performances, where he finished 10th and 19th in his first two starts at the short oval.

With momentum on Dixon’s side and redemption on McLaughlin’s mind, the Kiwi trio are fired up for two big races in two days on the fastest short track in the world.

Callum Hedge – Indy NXT

Callum Hedge continued his strong Indy NXT campaign last weekend at Mid-Ohio, banking another solid points finish with a composed drive to sixth.

The Tony Quinn Foundation ambassador was quick all weekend, third in both practice sessions and qualifying strongly in sixth, before holding steady in a crash-affected race to notch his third straight Top 7 finish.

That consistency sees Hedge sitting seventh in the championship standings after eight rounds, and now he heads straight to Iowa Speedway for the second oval race of the year.

➡️ Mid-Ohio Recap HERE

It’s a new type of challenge for the rising Kiwi star, but with momentum on his side and speed in the Abel Motorsports car, Callum will be aiming to make a strong impression at the world’s fastest short track.

Hunter McElrea – IMSA SportsCar Championship

Hunter McElrea and the TDS Racing crew faced a tough outing at the IMSA 6 Hours of The Glen in June. The trio of McElrea, Steven Thomas, and Mikkel Jensen were forced to retire after completing just 29 laps when their Oreca 07 LMP2 car made contact with the barriers during a caution period.

Torrential rain and the challenging conditions on slick tyres played a significant role in their off-track excursion, bringing a disappointing and early end to their weekend. Classified 53rd, the team was left frustrated but determined to bounce back in the next round.

Looking ahead to Round 8 of the IMSA SportsCar Championship at the Chevrolet Grand Prix this weekend, McElrea and co-driver Steven Thomas will be eager to turn the page and make amends on the 3.9km 10-turn road course.

With the team’s experience and pace, they’ll be aiming to put the wet-weather woes behind them and push hard for a strong finish.

After a chaotic and strategy-wrecking Jakarta E-Prix, Kiwi Formula E duo Nick Cassidy and Mitch Evans are gearing up for a crucial doubleheader in Berlin this weekend, the penultimate round of the 2025 season.

In Indonesia, Cassidy battled through collisions, full-course yellows, and mistimed attack modes to still salvage a gritty fifth-place finish, while Evans was unlucky to miss out on points in 12th after contact and damage early in the race.

Just a week earlier, Cassidy had delivered a commanding win in Shanghai, reminding the field he’s firmly in the title fight.

➡️ Jakarta E-Prix Recap HERE

Now it’s on to the unique concrete surface of Berlin’s Tempelhof Airport, where track evolution, energy management, and attack mode strategy will all come into play.

With just four races left in the championship, both Kiwis and Jaguar TCS Racing are still in the hunt for season honours. Expect the unexpected as Formula E returns to one of its most unpredictable venues.

Brendon Hartley & Earl Bamber – FIA World Endurance Championship

    • 6 Hours of SĂŁo Paulo: Monday 2:30 AM
  • How to Watch? FIA WEC TV

New Zealand’s endurance duo had mixed fortunes at the 2025 24 Hours of Le Mans, and both are now focused on getting back on top at the upcoming 6 Hours of São Paulo.

Hartley, alongside Sébastien Buemi and Ryō Hirakawa, led during the night and danced with podium contenders before heartbreak struck: a mechanical failure forced a 20‑minute repair stop and dropped the team from top-six contention, with the #8 Toyota ultimately finishing 15th (later promoted to 15th after penalties)

Bamber joined Jenson Button and SĂŠbastien Bourdais in the Hypercar #38 Cadillac for Hertz Team JOTA. The crew impressed by sweeping the front row in Hyperpole, securing P2 behind sister car #12 They maintained strong speed early on, even leading some stints, before finishing a hard-fought 7th, completing 386 laps and placing inside the top ten.

With Brazil set to host Round 5 of the WEC this weekend, it’s a fresh chance for our Kiwi racers to turn disappointment into standout performances as the championship shifts into its decisive phase.

Cormac Buchanan heads to this weekend’s German Grand Prix at Sachsenring with renewed determination, following a dramatic and gut-wrenching end to what could have been one of his best Moto3 results of the 2025 season.

The 18-year-old Southlander was on a tear through the field at Assen, charging from 22nd to 15th in the closing laps when disaster struck.

Pushing hard in pursuit of the lead group, Buchanan was taken out in a terrifying 245kph crash at Turn 15 after a rival clipped his front wheel attempting an aggressive overtake.

Incredibly, he walked away with only minor injuries, though the crash marked a devastating end to a weekend that had promise.

Assen wasn’t without its highlights. Buchanan stunned in Friday’s wet FP1 session, going fourth fastest and producing a now-viral save that racked up millions of views online.

➡️ Assen Recap HERE

While a tricky qualifying session left him deep in the pack, his Sunday charge showed he had the pace to fight for a top-ten finish.

The Kiwi has proven he has the grit, talent, and resilience to thrive in the ultra-competitive Moto3 field. Now it’s about putting it all together, and Sachsenring might just be the perfect place to do it.

Avalon Lewis & Billee Fuller – World WCR Championship

Carl Cox Motorsport’s Avalon Lewis and Billee Fuller are back on track this weekend at Donington Park for Round 3 of the World Women’s Circuit Racing Championship, carrying valuable momentum from their Italian campaign at Cremona.

Lewis impressed with a strong fifth-place finish in Race 2, battling in the lead group early before settling into a solid rhythm and crossing the line just 8.5 seconds off the win. It marked her second consecutive top-five finish, keeping her firmly in the mix as the season unfolds.

Fuller, in her rookie campaign, brought home another finish in 22nd. Despite struggling in the warmer race-day conditions, she continues to build confidence and experience at the world championship level.

Both riders are aiming to take another step forward this weekend at the iconic British circuit after an extended break between rounds.

New Zealand’s five Supercars stars – Matt Payne, Ryan Wood, Andre Heimgartner, Richie Stanaway, and Jaxon Evans – head into this weekend’s Townsville 500 looking to build momentum after a chaotic and dramatic Darwin Triple Crown.

Matt Payne was the standout, scoring two podiums, including a P3 in the final race to help Grove Racing secure a double-podium finish behind dominant winner Broc Feeney. Payne now sits third in the championship, just 14 points off second-placed Will Brown.

Andre Heimgartner also impressed, charging from 21st to 10th in Race 1, finishing fourth in Race 2, and backing it up with P7 in Race 3 – one of his strongest weekends of 2025 so far. He’s now eighth in the standings.

Ryan Wood endured heartbreak early with a mechanical DNF in Race 1, but bounced back to finish ninth and eighth in the final two races. He remains on the edge of the top ten in the points, just behind Anton De Pasquale.

Richie Stanaway had a bruising return to Darwin – taken out in Race 1, forced to retire in Race 2 after contact with Payne, and finishing 18th in Race 3 after an anonymous but steady drive.

Jaxon Evans was sidelined after an early crash in Race 1 left him with a sore foot and a heavily damaged car. The Walkinshaw Andretti United driver is expected to return in Townsville, looking to reignite his rookie campaign.

With Payne firmly in the title hunt, Heimgartner hitting form, and Wood closing in on the top 10, the Kiwis have plenty to play for in North Queensland. Expect fireworks on the streets of Townsville this weekend.

Ayrton Hodson – Super2 Series

Kiwi racer Ayrton Hodson heads to Townsville this weekend for Round 3 of the Dunlop Super2 Series, eager to rebound after a frustrating outing at Symmons Plains.

The Anderson Motorsport driver showed glimpses of potential throughout the weekend in Tasmania, but ultimately walked away with P16 in Race 1 and a DNF in Race 2 after being taken out early with gearbox damage.

Hodson had kicked off the season impressively with a front-row qualifying effort and P5 finish in Sydney, but Tasmania’s tight margins and green tyre unpredictability proved challenging.

Despite starting 19th in both races, he showed resilience in Race 1, climbing back through the field after an early off to claim points.

Race 2, however, ended on Lap 2 after contact at Turn 4 left his car trailing oil and forced a retirement.

➡️ Tasmania Round 2 Recap HERE

Now sitting 16th in the championship standings, Hodson is determined to bounce back on the streets of Reid Park, where consistency and race craft will be key.

Tom Bewley, Hunter Robb & William Exton – Porsche Sprint Challenge Australia

Three talented young New Zealanders, Tom Bewley, William Exton, and Hunter Robb, are heading to North Queensland for Round 4 of the Porsche Sprint Challenge Australia this weekend at the NTI Townsville 500, eager to bounce back and continue their rise in the ultra-competitive series.

The last round at Queensland Raceway delivered both highlights and heartbreak for the Kiwi trio, with podiums, bold charges, and late-race drama unfolding across the weekend.

William Exton (TekworkX Motorsport) looked sharp all weekend, qualifying on the front row and finishing third in both sprint races. He was running strongly again in the final Jim Richards Enduro when he attempted a bold pass for the lead, only to run wide and end up in the barrier—a DNF that cost him critical points in the championship.

Tom Bewley (Team Porsche NZ / EBM) endured a tough weekend, including two wild off-track moments and a jump that briefly launched all four wheels off the ground. But the teenager showed grit, salvaging 6th, 9th and 3rd across the three races. His recovery drive in the Enduro helped him retain second in the Pro class standings, just behind new leader Jake Santalucia.

Hunter Robb (Jones Motorsport) continued to gain momentum in his rookie season. After qualifying 16th, he stormed through to finish 8th and 6th in the opening races, his best results to date. A mechanical failure in the final race denied him a shot at the top ten, but his growing pace is a strong sign heading into Townsville.

With the championship reaching its second half, all eyes are on Townsville’s street circuit, where the trio will be part of the Supercars support card. Bewley remains firmly in title contention, Exton looks to rebound and claw back points, and Robb aims to convert potential into results.

Ben Stewart – Toyota GR Cup Australia

Ben Stewart is set to make his debut in the Toyota GR Cup Australia Series this weekend at the NTI Townsville 500, proudly flying the Kiwi flag in one of Supercars’ newest support categories.

The 19-year-old from Wellington joins forces once again with 99 Motorsport, the team with which he impressed in the 2024 Toyota 86 Scholarship Series, claiming two race wins, six podiums, and finishing fourth overall.

Now stepping into the freshly launched GR Cup, Stewart will tackle the five-round championship, beginning on the tight streets of Townsville before racing at iconic Aussie venues including Bathurst, the Gold Coast, and Sandown.

“I’m looking forward to getting back behind the wheel with 99 Motorsport,” Stewart said.

“We had a strong showing last season, and I’ve been working hard during the off-season to carry that momentum into 2025.”

Stewart’s rapid rise through the Toyota 86 ranks, highlighted by a scholarship-winning performance and a memorable cameo at Bathurst, marks him as one of New Zealand’s most exciting young talents.

As he prepares for his GR Cup debut, all eyes will be on how quickly he can adapt and challenge at the front of a competitive field.

Shane van Gisbergen and Scott McLaughlin return to Charlotte Motor Speedway on Wednesday, July 16, for Round 8 of the Cook Out Summer Shootout, racing under the Team SSR banner with Joe Ryan Race Cars in the Pro Division of the US Legend Car Series.

Last week saw the Kiwi duo tackling both Round 6 and Round 7, with SVG charging to an impressive second-place finish in the first feature, showing just how quickly he’s coming to grips with the short-track oval format.

In Round 6, van Gisbergen surged from 12th to finish runner-up, while McLaughlin recovered from a mid-race spin to cross the line in sixth.

In Round 7, the pair qualified closely together, and while SVG experienced a wild spin mid-race due to fluid on the track, he rebounded to finish just behind McLaughlin in another strong 6th–7th result for Team SSR.

➡️ Round 7 Recap HERE

Now fully immersed in the rhythm of US oval racing, both Kiwis are eyeing a podium breakthrough in Round 8. With momentum building and fierce on-track chemistry between them, they’re fast becoming a fan favourite double act in the series.
