NZ Formula First title fight heats up at Manfeild

The penultimate round of the 2024/2025 NZ Formula First Championship is set to deliver edge-of-your-seat racing as the series descends upon Manfeild Circuit Chris Amon. The championship battle remains wide open, with 525 points still up for grabs and six drivers vying for the national title.

Chris Symon continues to lead the championship, but he hasn’t had it all his own way. Close battles and five different drivers claiming victory in previous rounds set the stage for a dramatic showdown at Manfeild.

The Rookie Title fight is reaching full speed, with Yoshi Comesky and Ben Williams locked in a fierce duel separated by a mere 29 points. Cooper Prout remains within striking distance, ensuring at least a three-way battle for rookie honours that will go down to the wire.

The young guns will be eager to make their mark on the championship and prove their mettle against experienced competitors this weekend.

The six drivers still in contention for the championship title will leave nothing on the table as they seek to gain a crucial advantage heading into the final round. Will anyone close the gap to Chris Symon?

“The racing has been close and exciting since the season started back in October,” said Chris Symon.

“We certainly haven’t had it our own way. I haven’t maximised my driving, and we’ve had a few issues with the car. Dad (Ross Symon) has been working hard on the car between rounds to bring consistency back.”

Symon has had more finishes outside the Top 10 this season than in the last four years combined. A couple of mechanical issues and tight racing have hindered the four-time champion’s progress.

“Liam (Nicholson) & Liam (Foster) are expected to be fast this weekend, and I’m looking forward to racing the young guns, like Harry Scott and Keiano Weir, up front too,” added Symon.

Although not in the championship hunt, Edward Meyer (in the ex-Hayden Lines car) will be keen to race near the front again, seeking his first podium result.

The weather forecast predicts wet conditions at Manfeild, adding an extra layer of complexity and challenge to the racing. The slippery track surface will demand precision, car control, and adaptability from the drivers, with even the slightest mistake potentially proving costly.

The Manawatu Car Club, renowned for its well-organised events and passionate motorsport community, will play host to the penultimate round, ensuring a memorable experience for drivers and spectators alike.

The penultimate round promises to be a defining moment in the championship, with high stakes, close racing, and challenging conditions.
