Supercars confirms return to NZ in 2024

Supercars has announced that it will return to NZ next year, where it will call Taupo International Motorsport Park its new home.

The return of the Australian racing series will be supported by both the Government and Taupo District Council who will both back the event until at least 2026.

“We are honoured to receive the New Zealand Major Events and Taupo District Council’s endorsement for the Supercars Championship’s return in 2024,” says Shane Howard, CEO of Supercars.

“A key priority for Supercars has been the Championship’s return to New Zealand and its passionate fan base.

“This support is a great step forward in ensuring we can begin a new chapter of racing at the world-class circuit in Taupo.

“With the support and the availability of Taupo International Motorsport Park, Supercars is now focused on identifying a suitable date for the event in 2024.”

Supercars has been searching for a new home in NZ since Pukekohe Park Raceway shut its doors to all motorsport activity in April, as its owner Auckland Thoroughbred Racing (ATR) stated that it wants to further develop the site in favour of the present horse club.

That left the series with a few options, including nearby circuit Hampton Downs in northern Waikato or even a switch to the South Island.

However, Taupo was ultimately the track of choice and owner Tony Quinn thinks Kiwis (and the Aussies) are going to love it.

“It’s fitting that Supercars is coming back to NZ and hats off to everyone who has made it happen. The Kiwis are going to love the excitement of it all,” says Quinn.

“While some people might be surprised that it’s at our Taupo track, we think it’s a winning combination – the track will provide excellent racing, the consents are all in place, Taupo and their community have a proven track record in hosting world-class events, and we know that Supercars knows how to make the magic happen.”

Quinn added the central North Island track to his portfolio of circuits at the end of 2021 and has since been “full steam ahead” in bringing it up to scratch with upgrades to the facilities.

Taupo International Motorsport Park has four configurations of which Supercars will use the 3.32km-long International Circuit configuration.

It’s got everything the touring car series needs, including a three-storey pit late complex with 32 garages, corporate suites, and a race control complex, making it the perfect place for fans and competitors.

Supercars will mark its return to NZ in 2024 with more information about event dates, ticketing information, and more expected to be released over the coming weeks.

Pity that its so far away. We used to travel regularly to Hampton Downs but at 76 years old Taupo is to long a drive.
