KIWIS RACING ABROAD | JUNE 20–24 WEEKEND PREVIEW 🏁
It’s another massive weekend for Kiwi motorsport, with 28 Kiwi drivers flying the flag across 15 categories on some of the most iconic circuits around the globe.
From the fearsome Nürburgring Nordschleife to America’s Road America, Italy’s Mugello, France’s Paul Ricard and Australia’s Hidden Valley, this weekend is a worldwide celebration of speed, grit, and Kiwi talent.
Endurance fans will be spoilt with Earl Bamber, Hunter McElrea and Andrew Waite tackling the IMSA 6 Hour at Watkins Glen, while Guy Stewart takes on one of the toughest challenges in world motorsport, the 24 Hours of Nürburgring.
Watkins Glen also hosts Ryan Yardley and Madeline Stewart in Carrera Cup North America and Brendon Leitch and Will Bamber in Lamborghini Super Trofeo.
In the U.S., all eyes are on Scott Dixon, Scott McLaughlin and Marcus Armstrong as the IndyCar season moves to Road America, with young chargers Callum Hedge and Liam Sceats also back in action in Indy NXT. Jacob Douglas and Sebastian Manson join the line-up at Road America, competing in a triple header weekend for USF Pro 2000.
Across the Pacific, Australia’s Hidden Valley sees a full Kiwi Supercars line-up with Matt Payne, Ryan Wood, Richie Stanaway, Andre Heimgartner and Jaxon Evans, while Clay Osborne and Marco Giltrap continue their Porsche Carrera Cup Australia campaigns.
On the world stage, Hayden Paddon heads to the iconic Donegal International Rally in Ireland, Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy resume their Formula E title fight in Jakarta, and rising star Cormac Buchanan takes on Moto3’s Mugello challenge.
There’s also double duty for Shane van Gisbergen, who tackles NASCAR at Pocono Raceway before heading to Charlotte Motor Speedway with McLaughlin for another Tuesday night of thrills in the Summer Shootout U.S. Legends.
In Europe, Kiwi teenager Zack Scoular continues his campaign in Eurocup-3 at Circuit Paul Ricard, looking to add to his growing reputation on the junior single-seater ladder.
No matter the surface, distance or discipline, Kiwi drivers are in the thick of the action yet again.

Shane van Gisbergen etched his name into the NASCAR history books once again, delivering a commanding performance to win the first-ever NASCAR Cup Series points race held outside the United States in 67 years, and he did it while battling food poisoning.
The Kiwi’s win at Mexico City’s Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez was nothing short of sensational. Feeling unwell all weekend, van Gisbergen still managed to claim pole position, master unpredictable wet-dry conditions, survive multiple restarts and incidents, and ultimately dominated the field with a 16.5-second winning margin.
With the victory, van Gisbergen not only adds another landmark Cup Series road course win to his growing resume, but he also secures a place in the 2025 NASCAR Playoffs.
Mexico Race Recap HERE
Now, van Gisbergen turns his focus to Pocono Raceway, where he’ll make his Cup debut at the “Tricky Triangle.” He’s raced there just once before, in last year’s Xfinity race, where a late crash ended his day in 31st.
Scott McLaughlin, Scott Dixon & Marcus Armstrong – NTT IndyCar Series

- Where? Road America, Wisconsin.

It was a rollercoaster weekend for New Zealand’s IndyCar trio at Gateway Motorsports Park, with chaos, strategy, and late-race drama shaping a race full of twists.
Scott Dixon once again demonstrated why he’s considered one of the sport’s greatest strategists, turning a quiet start into a brilliant fourth-place finish. The Chip Ganassi Racing veteran stayed calm through multiple cautions and pit cycles, timing his stops to perfection and briefly leading in the final stint before saving enough fuel to secure a strong result.
Marcus Armstrong was in the mix all day, running solidly inside the top ten before dropping a lap down through pit strategy. A gritty drive saw him claw back into the top ten to finish tenth, marking another impressive step in his sophomore campaign.
For Scott McLaughlin, the weekend began with promise as he led the early stages and looked a genuine threat for victory. But a pit lane penalty and later a right-rear tyre issue forced him to retire after 200 laps, ending his day in disappointment.
Round 8 Gateway Motorsports Park Recap HERE
Now, all three Kiwis turn their focus to Road America in Wisconsin, where Round 9 of the 2025 NTT IndyCar Series takes place this weekend. The high-speed road course will mark a return to more familiar ground, and McLaughlin, Dixon, and Armstrong will be eager to bounce back, or build on their Gateway performances.
Callum Hedge & Liam Sceats – Indy NXT

It was a race of strategy and precision at the St. Louis GP for the Indy NXT field, and Kiwi Callum Hedge delivered a composed drive to finish seventh in the first caution-free oval race in three years.
Hedge looked strong early, briefly holding provisional pole in qualifying before a flurry of late fast laps pushed him down to seventh on the grid. He slipped one spot at the start but fought back quickly, reclaiming the place by Lap 3 and defending strongly under pressure through the middle stages of the race.
While unable to close the gap to the leaders, Hedge maintained consistent pace and avoided trouble, securing valuable championship points to stay seventh in the standings.

Unfortunately, fellow New Zealander Liam Sceats was forced to sit out the round due to car issues, but those problems have now been resolved. Both Hedge and Sceats will return to action this weekend at Road America for Round 7 of the 2025 Indy NXT Championship, as the series heads back to a fast and flowing road course where both Kiwis will be aiming to make an impact.

Two of New Zealand’s brightest single-seater prospects are back on track this weekend as Jacob Douglas and Sebastian Manson gear up for Round 6 of the USF Pro 2000 Championship at the legendary Road America in Wisconsin.
For Jacob Douglas (Pabst Racing), the momentum is building. Fresh off a maiden victory at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and a strong top-ten finish in his second-ever oval race at IRP, the Christchurch native is riding a wave of form. Douglas showcased both pace and poise in the most recent in-season test at Road America, topping three of the six sessions and going no lower than second across both days.
“We’ve come a long way since my first oval race here in 2022,” said Douglas, who also celebrated success off the track after being named the 2024 Ian Snellgrove Trophy recipient, an honour recognising the top graduate of the Elite Motorsport Academy.
Meanwhile, fellow Kiwi Sebastian Manson (TJ Speed Motorsports) continues to develop in his rookie campaign. At IRP, Manson gained valuable oval experience, qualifying 15th and finishing 14th in a clean run to the flag. During the Road America test, the 17-year-old showed clear progress, climbing as high as 8th quickest on Day 2, his best performance yet in the highly competitive field.
Manson, who was 13th fastest in practice ahead of the last round, will be looking to take another step forward and push closer to the top ten this weekend at one of North America’s most iconic road courses.

The Supercars Championship heads to Hidden Valley Raceway this weekend for the Indigenous Round, and New Zealand’s five-strong squad is fired up after a dramatic Perth weekend.
Ryan Wood was the standout, claiming his first-ever Supercars pole and race win in Race 14, then leading again in Race 15 before a mechanical failure cruelly ended his double-win hopes. Contact in Race 16 denied him more points, but the rookie showed he’s a serious threat heading into Darwin.
Matt Payne continued his consistent form, scoring top-six finishes in all three races, including a podium in Race 16. He remains firmly in the title fight, third in the standings.
Andre Heimgartner and Jaxon Evans both rebounded strongly on Sunday. Heimgartner surged from 24th to 10th, while Evans climbed to 12th after a DNF on Saturday. Richie Stanaway delivered a clean drive to finish 14th in Race 16.

After nearly 100 days away, Kiwi duo Marco Giltrap and Clay Osborne are back in action as Porsche Carrera Cup Australia resumes at Hidden Valley Raceway, supporting the Supercars Indigenous Round.
The pair last raced in Melbourne alongside Formula 1, where Osborne starred with a career-best fifth place after a gutsy drive from ninth on the grid, holding off intense pressure in a frantic one-lap sprint to the flag.
Giltrap, meanwhile, recovered brilliantly from 26th on the grid after throttle issues in qualifying to finish 13th, passing ten cars, including two teammates in a storming charge through the field.

It’s a quick turnaround for Kiwi racers Ryan Yardley and Madeline Stewart as Porsche Carrera Cup North America heads to Watkins Glen International for Round 4 this weekend.
Yardley arrives with momentum, having claimed a win and a second-place finish last weekend in Montréal. The Christchurch driver was flawless under pressure, taking his first Canadian victory in Race 1 and backing it up with another front-running drive in Race 2, results that vaulted him to second in the championship standings.
Watkins Glen is a happy hunting ground for Yardley, who took a race win at the track in 2024, and he’ll be looking to repeat that success as the series hits its halfway point.
Meanwhile, Stewart showed grit in Montréal, gaining ground in Race 1 before a penalty set her back in Race 2. She’ll be aiming to rebound strongly with her JDX Racing crew in New York.

Three Kiwi drivers — Earl Bamber, Hunter McElrea, and Andrew Waite are set to take on the prestigious 6 Hours of Watkins Glen this weekend as IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship action returns for Round 7.
Earl Bamber, a full-timer in the top-tier GTP class, reunites with Jack Aitken and F1 reserve Frederik Vesti in the Cadillac Whelen V-Series.R. After finishing 10th in Detroit, Bamber and his squad aim to bounce back as they chase valuable points from 11th in the standings.
Hunter McElrea arrives in strong form, sitting 4th in the LMP2 championship with teammates Steven Thomas and Mikkel Jensen for TDS Racing. The young Kiwi will once again pilot the ORECA 07 in a stacked field, looking to fight for class honours.
Making his 2025 IMSA debut, Andrew Waite joins Triarsi Competizione in the Ferrari 296 GT3, lining up in the GTD class alongside Onofrio Triarsi and Ferrari ace James Calado. Fresh off domestic endurance duties in New Zealand in the North Island Endurance Series, Waite steps into international competition for this six-hour classic.

After a rollercoaster Round 2 at Laguna Seca, Kiwi racers Will Bamber and Brendon Leitch are locked and loaded for Round 3 of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America Championship, held this weekend alongside IMSA at the legendary Watkins Glen International.
Both drivers showed immense speed and resilience in California, and now head to upstate New York with their eyes firmly on redemption and silverware.
Will Bamber, racing in the Pro class with TR3 Racing, impressed with a brilliant opening stint in Race 1, running second overall before handing over to teammate Elias De La Torre, who launched a dramatic charge from 18th to 1st, only for heartbreak to strike with a late crash. In Race 2, the pair bounced back with a strong, strategic drive to finish fifth overall and fourth in class, salvaging vital championship points in a chaotic affair.
Brendon Leitch, co-driving with American Anthony McIntosh for Wayne Taylor Racing, endured a crushing DNF in Race 1 after early contact ended their race on the opening lap. But the Kiwi came roaring back in Race 2, taking the start and immediately asserting dominance in the Pro-Am class. A rapid opening stint saw Leitch build a commanding lead before handing over to McIntosh, who brought the car home third overall and first in Pro-Am, the duo’s second class win of the season.

After a mixed weekend in Shanghai, Kiwi Formula E stars Nick Cassidy and Mitch Evans are Jakarta-bound for Round 12 of the 2025 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, racing this Saturday on the streets of the Indonesian capital.
For Nick Cassidy, the latest double-header was a tale of two races. He was caught out in chaotic conditions in Race 1, spinning to the back of the pack after contact through the chicane and finishing a frustrated 21st.
But when the skies opened again in Race 2, Cassidy delivered one of the standout performances of the season—a masterclass wet-weather win from pole to flag. His flawless drive through treacherous conditions saw him become the first GEN3 Evo driver to lead every lap and reignited his championship campaign, lifting him to 7th in the standings on 58 points.
Teammate Mitch Evans endured a more difficult outing. After starting a lowly 18th in Race 1 and finishing 20th, the Aucklander clawed his way to 14th in the rain-soaked second leg but still left Shanghai without a points finish. He sits 18th overall heading into Jakarta and will be eager to reset and reassert himself as a front-runner in the closing stretch of the season.
Shanghai Recap HERE
With the Jaguar TCS Racing team buoyed by Cassidy’s return to winning form, the focus now shifts to Jakarta, a demanding, technical street circuit known for tight corners, punishing heat, and unpredictable outcomes. With just five rounds remaining, every point matters as the Kiwi duo look to make their mark in the final push of 2025.

After a bruising but experience-rich outing in Portugal, Kiwi rookie Zack Scoular is ready to tackle new territory as the 2025 Eurocup-3 Championship moves to Circuit Paul Ricard this weekend for Round 3.
The Tony Quinn Foundation-backed driver showed flashes of fight during Round 2 at Portimão, navigating chaotic races and frequent Safety Cars to claim his best result of the season so far—17th in Sunday’s Sprint Race. Across the weekend, Scoular steadily chipped away at the field, gaining valuable positions in every race despite a difficult qualifying and some bruising wheel-to-wheel action.
Scoular’s learning curve has been steep, but there were signs of real progress in Portugal. He outperformed several of his Palou Motorsport teammates and showed improving racecraft, including strong restarts, smart positioning, and an ability to capitalize on the carnage that’s become a hallmark of the tightly contested series.
Now sitting 25th in the championship standings, Scoular faces a fresh challenge in France—his first-ever race at the high-speed, technical layout of Paul Ricard. With no prior race experience at the circuit, the Kiwi will be looking to make the most of testing and track time to close the gap and continue his upward momentum.
Round 2 Portugal Recap HERE
With only one Palou Motorsport car having scored points so far this season, the team will be hoping for a breakthrough in Le Castellet. Scoular, armed with two tough race weekends under his belt, will be aiming to put all the lessons learned to good use and hunt for his first Eurocup-3 points finish of 2025.

Christchurch’s Guy Stewart is set to tackle one of the world’s toughest endurance races this weekend – 24hr Nürburgring at the legendary Nordschleife.
Stewart will line up with Sorg Rennsport, sharing a Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport in the fiercely contested SP10 (GT4) class. The 25.3km Nürburgring Nordschleife – dubbed the “Green Hell” – is notorious for its technical complexity, treacherous weather shifts, and relentless demands on both driver and machine. It’s Stewart’s first start in the Nürburgring 24 Hours, but he’s no stranger to the German endurance scene.
Earlier this year, Stewart and Sorg Rennsport earned a podium finish in the GT4 class at the 12 Hours of Spa, and the Kiwi has made several strong appearances in the Nürburgring Endurance Series (NLS) leading into this weekend. His adaptation to the Nordschleife has been rapid, with consistent stints and sharp racecraft alongside experienced international co-drivers. Stewart also competes in the Pirelli Porsche Race Series here in New Zealand.
This weekend’s race begins Sunday (NZT time) and runs through to Monday, with more than 140 cars entered across multiple categories, including factory giants and seasoned privateers. For Stewart, it’s the biggest test of his endurance career to date, and a standout moment in his growing GT racing résumé.

Fresh off a 10th-place finish at Aragón, the Invercargill rider is hitting his stride in his rookie Moto3 campaign. A composed ride at MotorLand saw Buchanan climb from 13th on the grid, strategically working his way into the lead group and finishing just 1.7 seconds off the win in one of the most dramatic races of the season.
“Staying patient and managing the tyres was key,” Buchanan said post-race. “We were right there in the front group, and that’s huge progress.”
Now sitting 15th in the championship standings, the 18-year-old heads to Mugello full of confidence. With its 350km/h straight, flowing curves, and steep elevation changes, the Tuscan circuit is one of MotoGP’s most iconic, and most challenging, but Buchanan has shown he’s ready to take it on.

After years of hearing about the electric atmosphere and passionate fans of Irish rallying, Hayden Paddon finally ticks a major item off his motorsport bucket list this weekend as he lines up for the iconic Donegal International Rally in Ireland.
Paddon will compete in a Hyundai i20 N Rally2, run by the C&M Motorsport team, and co-driven by Irishman Dave Moynihan, whose deep local knowledge will be crucial on the tight and technical tarmac stages of the northwest. With over 200 cars entered and a crowd of more than 70,000 spectators expected, Paddon is relishing the challenge of competing on unfamiliar ground, and in front of one of the most passionate fanbases in rallying.
“Rallying is a bit special here in Ireland,” he shared.
“So far from recce, we’ve seen some very enjoyable but challenging stages. Realistically, it’ll be tough to challenge the locals with their stage knowledge, but we’ll give it our best and most importantly, enjoy the experience.”
It’s a whirlwind entry for Paddon. Running over three days on narrow, fast, and unforgiving roads, the Donegal International is widely regarded as one of the toughest rallies in Europe. But if there’s one thing Paddon thrives on, it’s new challenges in world-class company.

Kiwi stars Shane van Gisbergen and Scott McLaughlin return to Charlotte Motor Speedway mid-next week for Round 4 of the Cook Out Summer Shootout, ready to race under the lights in the NASCAR Night Special, driving for Joe Ryan Race Cars.
Last week’s Round 3 delivered a wild ride of elbows-out racing, full-course cautions, and classic short-track drama, and the SSR teammates were in the thick of it.
Van Gisbergen, fresh off his NASCAR Cup Series win in Mexico, fought hard all night in the A-Feature, charging to 5th after surviving late-race chaos.
McLaughlin looked set for a podium before a late spin knocked him to 11th, but his pace and racecraft once again proved he’s a serious threat on the quarter-mile oval.
Both drivers showcased true grit, battling Cup Series names like Bubba Wallace and now shift focus to Tuesday night (Wednesday NZT) with eyes firmly on the podium, and possibly even a win.
