Shane van Gisbergen celebrated his 37th birthday in the best possible way at Watkins Glen International, turning pole position into a dominant NASCAR Cup Series victory after a stunning late-race comeback through the field.

The Trackhouse Racing driver started the weekend strongly by claiming his first pole position of the 2026 season with a 71.165-second lap around the New York road course. It was the fifth pole of his NASCAR Cup Series career and led a Chevrolet front-row lockout alongside Michael McDowell, while teammate Connor Zilisch qualified fifth.
Van Gisbergen made a clean start from pole and quickly cleared McDowell into Turn 1 to take control of the race. Behind him, Zilisch moved forward early, passing Austin Cindric for fourth on Lap 3 before beginning to close in on the leaders.
By Lap 11, van Gisbergen had already built a lead of more than three seconds over McDowell, with Zilisch now up to third.
The Kiwi looked in complete control during the opening stage, leading all but two laps before strategy came into play late in the run. Van Gisbergen and Zilisch both pitted before the end of Stage 1 to gain track position for Stage 2, giving up the chance for stage points. After the cycle, van Gisbergen dropped to eighth while Ross Chastain inherited the stage win.
When Stage 2 got underway, van Gisbergen immediately returned to the front. Starting alongside McDowell once again, he cleared him into Turn 1 before Zilisch moved past McDowell for second only two laps later.
The pair quickly pulled away from the field, with Zilisch sitting within half a second of van Gisbergen as they traded fast laps around Watkins Glen.
A caution caused by a tent blowing onto the circuit changed the strategy late in the stage. Van Gisbergen and Zilisch both came to pit road with seven laps remaining, handing the lead to McDowell, who stayed out hoping to secure the stage win.
Van Gisbergen worked his way back through the field quickly and passed McDowell with four laps remaining to retake the lead. He went on to win Stage 2, claiming his first stage victory since the Charlotte Roval race last season.
The final stage saw another strategy battle unfold after a caution for Joey Logano, who ran off at Turn 1 and left debris on the track. Van Gisbergen looked set to pit under yellow before pulling back onto the track at the last moment, with Tyler Reddick following him.
On the restart, Reddick challenged for the lead, but van Gisbergen held him off and slowly started to pull away again. AJ Allmendinger later moved into second, but van Gisbergen continued to control the race out front.
With 24 laps to go, the Kiwi brought his Chevrolet to pit road for his final stop while holding a lead of nearly six seconds. The stop dropped him back to 23rd place, leaving him with plenty of work to do. What followed was one of the drives of the season.
With 19 laps remaining, van Gisbergen was up to 12th but still nearly 22 seconds behind race leader Ty Gibbs. Lap by lap, he carved through the field and rapidly closed the gap.
By the time there were 10 laps to go, van Gisbergen had climbed to fifth and was less than five seconds off the lead. Two laps later, he caught Gibbs and completed the pass for the race lead with eight laps remaining.
In just 18 laps, van Gisbergen had wiped out a 29-second deficit.
Once back in front, he drove away from the field, eventually taking the chequered flag by 7.2 seconds over McDowell. Gibbs finished third ahead of Chase Briscoe and Tyler Reddick.
Austin Dillon, AJ Allmendinger, Kyle Busch, Austin Cindric, and John Hunter Nemechek completed the top 10, while Zilisch finished 20th after running near the front for much of the race.
The NASCAR Cup Series heads to Dover International Speedway next weekend for the NASCAR All-Star Race, an annual non-points race, scheduled for Monday, 18 May at 5:00am NZST.
